The first updates have emerged about a fresh wave of asylum seekers who reached Australian shores in recent weeks.
Case manager Heidi Abdel-Raouf says the men are in shock to have found themselves imprisoned on a remote foreign island."The people we've spoken to on Nauru are reporting to us that they're experiencing high levels of distress, anxiety, depression, sleeping issues, isolation, and some are expressing suicidal feelings," she said.
Another concern for the ASRC is the adequacy of mental health services, which it believes have been reduced from a specialised trauma-informed service to a generalised medical contract. The Department of Home Affairs has defended the conditions, pointing out it has outsourced primary responsibility to the Nauru government.
"All individuals transferred to Nauru are provided with a mobile phone and have access to the internet."The federal government is standing firm on its long-running policy of denying boat arrivals the option of settling in Australia, even if their asylum claim is approved. The first group of people that arrived in September is believed to have been comprised of 11 people, including a woman and a child.surreal scenes at the Beagle Bay community north of Broome
The fact that none of the boats have been found suggests the skippers involved are using high-speed vessels to exit Australian waters before authorities are aware their passengers have been delivered to shore. Some who have arrived in recent months have accepted government offers of payment to return to their home countries
