The S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 1.6 per cent to 6700.2 points. Whitehaven climbed 3.8 per cent to $8.96, Fortescue fell 4.4 per cent to $16.54.

Whitehaven Coal shares surged on Wednesday after the miner floated a plan to buy back up to a quarter of its stock to reward investors in a period of sustained high coal prices.

Investment company Washington H. Soul Pattinson reported a 2022 profit of $834.6 million, up from a restated $328.1 million a year earlier. On a statutory basis, WHSP suffered a $12.9 million net loss, compared with the restated year-earlier $273.2 million profit. It declared a fully franked final dividend of 43¢ a share plus a 15¢ special dividend to be paid on December 12. Its shares firmed 5 per cent to $27.10., brokers say.

Dual-listed Air New Zealand reported strong forward sales in the first three months of the financial year, particularly for travel through to January 2023, and continues to operate at 70 percent of its financial 2019 capacity.
