Australia's domestic spy agency will avoid referring to "Islamic extremism", instead changing its language to refer to "religiously" or "ideologically" motivated violent extremism.

"Understandably, some Muslim groups — and others — see this term as damaging and misrepresentative of Islam, and consider that it stigmatises them by encouraging stereotyping and stoking division. He said describing "left" or "right" extremism was also no longer relevant or applicable in many circumstances.

"Instead, they're motivated by a fear of societal collapse or a specific social or economic grievance or conspiracy.

Islamist: I shall cut off your head in the name of Islam! Apologist: What they mean is that they feel strongly ideologically motivated. Islamist: Death to the unbelievers! We shall seize yr women, &make them our slaves, as per the Koran! Apologist: He just really wants a hug.

we will always know its the islamist thus its never anyone else

Doing Dutton's bidding Lumping RW & LW terrorism together is an attempt to remove the (real) association between mainstream RW ideology and RW terrorism All current political terrorism in Australia is RW. LW terrorism hasn't been a thing since the 1970s (Baader-Meinfof etc)

And the ISIS terrorists will no longer refer to Westerners as Infidel Dogs...but are yet to work out a new PC name...

Why is asio going woke? I'd rather a non ideological agency watching Australia.

I never believed I could earn so much from bitcoin investment until Carson helped me to build my financial life back that is why i keep tweeting about him paidwithjoe, you too can build your financial life back again with is help by investing while he helps you grow your bitcoin

If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck it is a duck

Hopefully the Australian media will do the same

Strewth give us a break! Don't tell me ASIO has gone woke now. Afraid to call a spade a spade.

Um, but these wackos are Islamic, far right & far left. Religion is not part of it.

you are doing a disservice by only mentioning Islam in the tweet, when the article is about how they won’t be designating several categories any more

So the right wing extremists are called terrorists?

Assistant Commissioner Hermans said they were inspired by Islamic 'ideology-based, religious extremism'. But he stressed it made 'no difference' which religion was involved, as police focused on the crime, not the religion.

ASIO are amateurs. Their policy of managing and trying to turn terrorists and security threats has failed. The leadership should be purged and the organisation forced to move into the 21st Century.

Comments here again. The ABC have a massive audience/culture problem... only radical doctrine would attract such a radical audience... ItaButtrose ScottMorrisonMP

Meanwhile, terrorist plot foiled in Melbourne today....arrests in Epping.

They’re not fooling anyone

This is how the government distracts from the voice of women. Terrorists. Every time they have something go on there is a terrorism announcement or a covid announcement. This government is a joke.

Wahhabis gave the world infamous groups like ISIS or AQ. You can blame the US government for enabling their main supporter the Saudi gov. which is also the biggest arms importer in the world. They're starving the poor Yemenis as we speak.

These false belief systems lead to bad outcomes for society and they should all be re-educated. We need to weed them out then call them out.

Doesn’t matter which religion it is. They cannot violate the constitution and law. Over

Arrest those who did this terrible thing! Law and order!

Makes sense... How else do we refer to the Australian born Catholic terrorist that ATTACKED NZ? Now there's a white Catholic as an example of Australian terrorists it's best we 'don't specify' things....

Why ? They are terrorists ! Simple

Literally every single terrorist attack in Australia in the last 20 years has been carried out by Islamic extremists. If they call it religious extremism, people are just going to assume it's Islamic extremism anyway. 🙄

The ASIO boss's name is Burgess? Any relation to Guy Burgess? 😆

After 1,400 years of terrorism, as taught by Mohammed, it is now air-brushed from sight, not occurrence. Oh, I feel safer already.

Ideological terrorists? So, Post Modernists and Romantic Idealists? Bastards.

What happens if you run out of Islamic targets , change targets name ..

So kind of like how African gangs are just generically referred to as 'youth' now. Nice of them to obfuscate.

There’s only one problem on this planet, RELIGION, how many people have died because of it, it’s insane!

A turd is still a turd even though you may choose to call it by another name.

The intent is but diluted intelligence? There’s Catholic, Christian, whoever and whatever terrorist groups and surely as much as possible detailed information is key to defeating terrorist? I’m of Irish Catholic decent, know nutbags are attached to my faith but what of it?

So when it’s not Islamic, everyone will just assume it is. Ok then.

What’s their new tag for “politically correct fuckwits”? Never mind, they’ll probably just leave it as ASIO.

Does this include local policing?

So clarification on the ideological bit .... required...

How about we just call them all “US sponsored freedom fighters gone wild”?

Like the religious terrorists that protest out the front of womens health clinics?

🤣🤣🤣This is because they have to pretend they now love Muslims especially the ones in China so they can run the warmongers racket and lead us to nuclear holocaust

Asio, really? 'religious' or 'ideological' violence. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

Even though they are. Next, criminals will not be referred to as criminals because the term is upsetting to criminals and their associates.

That is an outrage given the statistics! Unbelievable.

Good, because the Christian Taliban is as dangerous but because they’re not brown they aren’t even suspected. The US experience should have taught us.

All religious belief theories and ideologies except my own holistic ideology implement terrorist actions.

This will fix everything 🤤

Good, because there are non-Islamic religious terrorism

ASIO directive on religious extremism is a ‘sop to activist class’ | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Rita Panahi says “anyone with a brain” can differentiate between Islamic extremists and non-violent practicing Muslims, after ASIO announced it’s ditching the term ‘Islamic extremism’ instead opting for ‘religious extremism’.\n\n“It seems to be again the suggestion that it was offensive to some in the Muslim community,” Ms Panahi said.\n\n“Anybody with a brain can differentiate between Islamist extreme Islam, and someone who is just a Muslim who follows their Islamic religion.\n\n“That extremism and those who are peaceful followers is a distinction everybody makes”.\n\nSky News host James Morrow said the move announced by ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess is a “sop to an activist class” which seeks to “muddy the waters and brush aside a threat” for reasons of political correctness.\n Why did it take about two decades to realise Christians have been known to be extreme once in awhile too. I am not sure how to categorise her views in this instance yet. Are puppets capable of independent thought? THE US HAVE AT LEAST 03 BIG Mistakes FROM Previous Presidents. 👉

ASIO boss expects foreign espionage to replace terrorism as primary threat | Sky News AustraliaIn his first televised interview since his appointment, ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said he expects espionage and foreign interference to replace terrorism as the organisation’s principle security concern.\n\nSpeaking exclusively with Sky News Chief Anchor Kieran Gilbert, Mr Burgess unpacked ASIO’s role to “protect Australia and Australians” from threats to their security.\n\n“But we’re the security intelligence service, so that’s not really that well understood, and that’s in part why I’m talking to you today,” he said.\n\n“We shine the light on bad problems, so we and others, through the actions we take, can deal with them”.\n\n“That’s a serious job, threats to security are real, but security service and the work we do is not a 100 per cent guarantee, that’s a fact of life.”\n\nASIO sits in the Home Affairs portfolio, and as Australia’s only security service they are responsible across the nation.\n\nMr Burgess said the way ASIO looks at national security, there are threats to life and threats to way of life.\n“So terrorism is a threat to life, espionage and foreign interference is a threat to way of life, they’re both really important,” he said.\n\n“If someone loses their life as a result of some violent extremist who kills them that’s terrible, it’s pretty serious, you can’t get much more serious than that”.\n\n“But of course, if you’ve got nations interfering in another nation and they’re doing in covertly so it’s a slow burn and corrosive thing, you can change our way of life.”\n\nHe said while terrorism is currently ASIO’s “principle concern”, he expects espionage and foreign interference to “supplant terrorism as our principle security concern”.\n\n“If the world events don’t change, it will supplant terrorism.”\n MikePBurgess MikePBurgess This is the worst part about being a Spy Cheif, you can only say things every informed person already knows and you can not talk about the really interesting stuff only a few people can know. And unlike Bond, women are really not that into you. MikePBurgess

ASIO boss defends decision on religious extremism | Sky News AustraliaASIO Director-General Mike Burgess has explained why the organisation altered its language regarding extremism, saying his focus is on identifying people who are going to conduct violence on Australians, rather than listing groups.\n\nASIO became the subject of criticism after it was announced the terms ‘Islamic extremism’ and ‘right wing extremism’ would be scrapped.\n\nThreats are now referred to as ‘religiously motivated violent extremism' or 'ideologically motivated violent extremism'.\n\nIn his first televised interview, Mr Burgess discussed the issue exclusively with Sky News Chief Anchor Kieran Gilbert.\n\nSpeaking about Islam in particular, the ASIO boss conceded it has been a “dominant factor” in terrorism over the last 20 years but rejected the claim most terrorism in a religious sense comes from a distortion of the Islamic faith.\n\n“Over the history of this world, that’s not actually true, students of history will know there’s other religions that have done vile things in the name of their religion – a small subset of the religion of course,” Mr Burgess said.\n\nHe said ASIO needs “terminology that helps us explain what we’re seeing” in relation to threats, citing the Incel movement (Involuntary celibates) as an example.\n\n“That’s not religious, that’s something completely different and doesn’t fit into the standard categories that we’ve previously used.”\n MikePBurgess Aussie Police/Defence/Intelligence agencies have made a reputation for being useless/dodgy/imposters! So easily it was that, - Our PM got egged - Man Haron Monis took lives in NSW - Cantwell (claiming to have PTSD) wrote novel on war account - COVID-19 (a WMD) entered Australia. MikePBurgess Aha but individuals perform violence against other individuals because of religious, cultural, social, educational systems forming their view. MikePBurgess Make sense that nut jobs come in all complexions and religions.
