With Xavier Fisher weighing just 765 grams when he was born last year with a serious heart condition, his young mother feared for her tiny son's life.
"I didn't think we would get this far," the 25-year-old says quietly as she cradles her six-month-old.Ms McGlashan, who also has a five-year-old daughter Ava, was 28 weeks pregnant with Xavier when an ultrasound at the Logan Hospital, south of Brisbane, identified he was not growing as he should be. Tests revealed Xavier was missing a small part of his 22nd chromosome, leading to the DiGeorge syndrome diagnosis, a rare condition affecting about one in 4,000 babies.Mater director of neonatology Pita Birch says the combination of Xavier's severe prematurity and DiGeorge syndrome was challenging for doctors treating him.Ms McGlashan and her partner Brendon Fisher, 24, of Ipswich, west of Brisbane, have been told their son may experience difficulties with walking, talking, and learning.
