Queensland will soon leave its hardline quarantine requirements behind. What does it mean for the multimillion-dollar, commercial-in-confidence and privately owned Toowoomba quarantine facility?

The Palaszczuk government’s go-it-alone quarantine facility outside Toowoomba is ready for its first guests. But who they will be, or under what circumstances they will be directed there, remains unclear.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath directed queries about the value of Wellcamp facility, now officially called the Queensland Regional Accommodation Centre , to Deputy Premier Steven Miles, who was coordinating the government’s side of the project.Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announces the state government had reached an agreement for a dedicated quarantine hub at Wellcamp.

Even if an unvaccinated international arrival entered quarantine at Wellcamp, they would be shut out of most shops and buildings, including hospitality venues and many agribusiness settings, once they were allowed into the community, effectively spoiling the point of them arriving in the first place.

What is known about the terms is that the Wagner Corporation agreed to build the facility and then lease it to the Queensland government for at least one year. This could be extended depending on the state of the pandemic.
