A doctor on the Victorian Government's healthcare worker infections taskforce says the Box Hill Hospital cluster that led to an outbreak across Melbourne's north highlights ongoing weaknesses with infection control standards in hospitals.

Senior doctor Neela Janakiramanan, who is a member of the Victorian Government's Healthcare Worker Infection Prevention and Wellbeing Taskforce, said the system was lacking. She said the concerns of distressed healthcare workers were falling on deaf ears.

"I'm not going to target any single specific hospital because I can tell you these are issues across the board," she said. "The guidelines are not being followed, staff on the ground are identifying concerns and taking them to their direct line managers, to senior executives at hospitals and those concerns are being ignored."Department of Health and Human Services deputy secretary of case contact and outbreak management, Euan Wallace, has defended the system.

"The provision of PPE to healthcare workers in our health services, the guidance for that, who should be wearing what PPE, what type of masks and when, that guidance is ahead of the Commonwealth standards," he said. What you need to know about coronavirus:

Call on the health minister. Administrative staff in most hospitals are notoriously incompetent. They acquire jobs through nepotism and are on power trips to inconvenience doctors and nurses to the best of their ability.

there are more than a few hospitals around Victoria that are in atrocious condition, both as far as actual cleanliness as well as far as staff attitudes to healthcare policies, so this is really not surprising even in the slightest.

Yup. One of the hospitals that I know of will only start fit testing in Nov...

I have a friend who works at another hospital who only started fit testing a few weeks ago. She tells me that the issue with fit testing earlier on was lack of availability of masks. That has been the biggest issue.

Why Melbourne's reopening is on hold as regional Victoria steps forwardVictorian authorities acknowledge frustration over delays to reopening is at 'boiling point', but say they need to review critical test results from Melbourne's north to make sure no unidentified 'wildfire' is waiting to spark a third wave. Because we have a timid Premier who still doesn’t trust his own DHHS and their contact tracing capabilities. This tweet is not true. Given the Premier's clarity, I think we have to assume your tweet is a lie. For the record, the ANNOUNCEMENT of the nature of the reopening has been delayed until the results of tests in a complex outbreak are available. Reopening still planned for Nov 2. Is this a government script? Where is your independent reporting?
