Navarro, who won her first WTA title in Hobart this year, was able to outlast the world No 2 in a back-and-forth contest that lasted 1hr 56min.Two breaks in the decider helped Navarro to claim the 18th win of her season, which puts her top of the list of most WTA wins in 2024, ahead of Iga Swiatek.It was Navarro who claimed the decisive opening break of the first set to move 5-3 up and an ace helped to seal it to give the 22-year-old American the initiative.

Mertens was unable to back up her win against Naomi Osaka in the previous round, hitting just four winners to 21 unforced errors in a match that lasted just over an hour.The third-seeded Gauff saw her section of the draw open up after Sabalenka’s defeat and will face either the 11th seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina or the unseeded Yuan Yue of China for a spot in the semi-finals.in round three on Tuesday but could not find the same level and went down 6-4, 6-3 to the American.
