Art can hit home while bypassing reason. For three months, in a closed Melbourne gallery, an exhibition of messed-up screen prints has sat in the dark: a screaming, angry bat nudged up against a 17th-century painting of a woman about to calmly bang a tent peg into the head of a sleeping man. You know it makes sense. You couldn’t pick a better image to sum up 2021.
Instead, they might have shows that are on for one week or 16, depending on what suits the artists and the art world.“We’re not necessarily having just a public opening, or VIP dinners or lunches. We might have two people or 20 people, we probably announce them two days before or even on the day for the first 20 people who can make it.”
“But I think flexibility is a permanent change, and I think irregularity is a permanent change. There are short, medium and long-term ideas and goals and new paradigms and planning happening all at once. It’s going to be largely unstructured, and I think that’s a new way of being.”
