"The most significant part of this research shows that the wattle was collected throughout time, throughout the 50,000 years of occupation at this site," Ms Byrne, from the University of Western Australia, said. "Each species of tree has its own anatomy that's preserved when it's turned into charcoal," Ms Bryne said.

Researchers took scanning electron microscope images of charcoal made from modern trees as comparative samples.Ms Byrne said the enduring relationship with the wattle highlighted the significance of the iconic Australian plant.
