Jobs for apprentices have collapsed nationwide since social distancing measures began, threatening to cut off thousands of people from workplace training and exacerbating the looming skills shortage.
Hospitality, travel and tourism jobs have all but disappeared, with three advertised nationwide last month compared with 121 last year. Sport, recreation, hair and beauty positions are down to seven from 76, as social distancing measures halt training opportunities in close-contact fields.In the building, construction and automotive industries, which are still operating, vacancies have reduced by 63 per cent.
"We're seeing about one in five of our apprentices being returned [released from work] due to social distancing restrictions, or employers finding such a large downturn in their work volume," Mr Workman said.The government has offered subsidies for employers through its JobKeeper scheme and a support program for apprentices and trainees.
