Applying the 'lockdown' approach to nature could help save species — and humanity

"We have a lot of species that tend to have large roaming areas, especially predators. When you see some of the bigger cats and other big wildlife and large mammals, they require quite a bit of room in order to maintain their populations," he says.

"Going after big targets will make politicians look good, but won't actually do a lot for saving the world's biodiversity," he says. "It's very easy to set aside protected areas, but it's much more difficult for us to protect the sort of special places where there is really a lot of unique species."Mr O'Donnell agrees on the need to be selective, to look for key areas of biodiversity.

For environmentalist Gary Tabor, there should also be an emphasis on increasing connectivity between biodiversity hot spots, and ensuring that any new nature corridors are functional.
