Readers discuss the meaning of Anzac Day and the state government’s decision to not proceed with a safe injecting room in Melbourne’s CBD.

You’re in a boat with other blokes just off the beach at Gallipoli, waiting your turn. Men are jumping off boats and wading towards the shore. You are seeing them getting cut down. And you witness that on the beach the slaughter continues. Your turn and that of others is fast approaching. You all realise the chances of getting through are slim, and yet all take the leap. Heroes.

It also doesn’t make any difference to the dead whether or not they are ″⁣respected″⁣ or ″⁣honoured″⁣ years after their death. Anzac Day surely makes us reflect on the futility of such conflicts and gives us pause to reflect on need to find a peaceful outcome.) Anzac Day should be a day of mourning. To see or hear the words ″⁣Anzac″⁣ and ″⁣celebration″⁣ in the same sentence is bizarre.Thousands of young men from Europe as well as Australia and New Zealand were slaughtered because of a misguided decision of the British admiralty.

In the case of the injecting facility, you have a group of commercial interests who claim their profits will suffer and hence there’ll be job losses and business closures, and on the other hand, a group of marginalised, often poor, drug-addicted individuals who risk death if they can’t find a safe place to inject their drug of preference.

Typically, governments try to ameliorate the impact for the losers of such choices, hence the funding for drug support services; a consolation prize of sorts. Whilst a very common condition, sufferers rarely come forward for fear that it will make little difference to their plight.
