The new prime minister is looking to adopt the Keating model and recreate another golden era for the bilateral relationship.

Leaders don’t get a second chance to make first impressions abroad, so Anthony Albanese may now have the opportunity for a bit more creativity in what was planned to be his first visit to Indonesia.

Keating meets with President Suharto in 1994 in what was a golden era for the bilateral relationship.A swift visit to Australia’s nearest Asian neighbours actually has an earlier genesis with Harold Holt touring South-East Asia, but not Indonesia, in 1966. He was followed by John Gorton in 1968, who did visit Jakarta but only after Vietnam and then Singapore. Gough Whitlam made the journey to Indonesia in September 1973, nine months after his election.

This time he should dive deeper into the Indonesia relationship to suggest a new approach by seeking a meeting with President Joko Widodo in eastern Indonesia nearer to Australia – potentially Makassar where Australia has opened its newest Indonesian diplomatic outpost.
