Some time on or around March 15, an ice shelf called Conger that was the size of the city of Rome collapsed into the dark and not quite frigid waters off the east coast of Antarctica.
Ice shelves are forced into the waters off the Antarctic by slow-moving streams of ice that flow off the continent into the ocean, where they can expand hundreds of metres beneath the ocean’s surface, CSIRO oceanographer Dr Beatriz Pena-Molino said. Dr Will Hobbs, a scientist with the Australian Antarctic program partnership at the University of Tasmania, said: “It could have just been a freak weather event. That happens. But if this starts happening regularly, it would be seriously terrifying.″
At present, there is not enough data around the location of what was the Conger ice shelf to know if the ocean has warmed significantly. Satellites are employed to track the water temperatures off the coasts of Australia but much of the data in that section of Antarctica is drawn from tagged seals.
Now tell us the truth🤓
