A woman who defended her community from a fire on the New South Wales South Coast says the country is amid an"existential crisis" and receiving an Australia Day honour as the country continues to burn, seems"insignificant".Ludo McFerran has received an Order of Australia Medal for significant service to women, children and to social justice.
Ms McFerran has had to defend her home from the Badja Forrest Rd Fire several times since it flared on New Year's Eve 2019. Today, the Bermagui resident received an Order of Australia Medal for significant service to women and children and to social justice, but she said it did not feel notable at this time.

As part of the process she would have been written to 6 months ago and given the opportunity to accept or decline the award. She accepted. Just another person looking for a soapbox.

Can’t believe the angry responses. Nominations are secret. You get told a short while beforehand and are told you must keep it secret. All she is saying is that her award seems dwarfed by the serious things that are happening at the moment. That doesn’t diminish the reason for it
