Almost four years after Louis Tate's death, federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has referred the issue of allergies and anaphylaxis for a parliamentary inquiry, established on Thursday auspol

Louis Tate's parents were vigilant about ensuring he was not exposed to milk, eggs or nuts - yet he died in an Australian hospital after being given cereal for breakfast.

Coroner Phillip Byrne found that Louis, who was in hospital for his asthma, had died from a reaction to an anaesthetic administered when he needed to be intubated after four shots of adrenalin failed to stop the anaphylaxis that was causing his throat to constrict. The coroner was unable to determine whether Louis had been given soy milk - as requested - or cow's milk.

But Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia chief executive officer Maria Said there were still gaps in the system nationally. "Just a week ago, I heard of a child who was given intravenous adrenalin when it is supposed to be an intramuscular injection." "It's so important that anyone running these companies has systems in place and proper training in food and allergies," Ms Robb said.
