Three former Australian soldiers take the Australian Tax Office to court over tax taken out of their medical discharge benefits.

On December 7 then-assistant treasurer Stuart Robert, also a veteran, introduced amendments to the tax regulation, which were passed by parliament, changing the law retrospectively. In a letter obtained by 7.30, Mr Robert denied the amendments he introduced were created to"specifically disadvantage" the three veterans in their test case."It only arose because of these test cases.

"To me, the government is there to administer the country on behalf of the people, not to undermine their position. Particularly not the veterans.""We're obviously concerned about any aspect of retrospectively when you're dealing with these situations," he told 7.30. "This really does need to be reviewed. And our veterans and our service people deserve to be properly supported.""This matter is currently before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and for secrecy and privacy reasons we cannot comment on the taxation affairs of particular taxpayers or communications that pertain to litigation involving a particular taxpayer," it said in a statement.

A judgement in the AAT case is due later this year and the veterans are hoping the new Parliament will disallow the change in regulations.

IRD only pick on poor people like me❗️The rich get a free pass❗️And the over sea's mulitinationals, get a free pass as well❗️ Where there's smoke, there's often fire. Something seems very off about how the ATO is dealing with this. Unless they are willing to be transparent it is reasonable to assume they are covering up systemic abuses of power.

ACT Budget slurps up surplus to fund infrastructure spendingThe ACT's budget bottom line will be headed for an $89 million deficit in the coming financial year, and while the Government claims to be investing that money in infrastructure, it has delivered a budget with little in the way of big-ticket spending. That's what surpluses are for - to fund future spending, not to keep forever. (Face palm) guys. Save some for the slow down. You’re gunna need it.
