There is renewed focus on Australia's ammonium nitrate stockpiles following the deadly blast in Beirut, but authorities in SA say the state's storage sites are secure and frequently monitored.

, but the company moved its operations to a location further from the centre of Port Adelaide in 2018.Ms Wright said small quantities of ammonium nitrate are used generally for fertilising crops, whereas larger amounts were used for mining.

She said storage of ammonium nitrate was kept at a safe distance from roads, churches, childcare centres and homes, and that only drivers with appropriate security clearance were permitted to transport it. "[It is] driven on known transport routes that they identify in their security management plan," she said.Ms Wright said regulations were enacted in 2006 in SA, forcing anyone who buys, transports, uses, or stores the chemical to first apply for a licence to do so from SafeWork SA."I can't imagine what may have occurred in Beirut for such an accident to occur," she added.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about an ammonium nitrate stockpile, in Newcastle in NSW, which is"That factory is only three kilometres from Newcastle's CBD and only 800 metres from North Stockton residents," chemical engineer and community campaigner Keith Craig said.

Great, next you will provide the map for want-to-be terrorists...

Do not panic. The ammonium nitrate explosion in Lebanon is just a conspiracy theory.

Probably not a good idea advertising this.

Actually abc you make me sick you keep reporting on storage facilities here by doing this you’re actually taking away from the actual tragedy and the 130+ people that have died and the 1000’s of people who have been displaced, typical neoliberal political crap media

Can please map out the sites so our terrorist friends from the burbs can have an easier time finding the stuff

ABC TRY A LITTLE RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM THE MAJORITY OF THIS IS USED ALMOST AS FAST AS IT IS MANUFCTURED, AND IF STORED CORRECTLY POSES NO THREAT

Why the fuck would you advertise that fact or even talk about it?

This product doesn't blow up like in Beirut unless it's prepped. This is more ABC fake news

Defund the ABC

And has bin for many years. This isn't Lebanon so STOP your Bullshit

Chemical is stored across SA. Next...

Why are you telling everybody this?

so it dosent just explode you idiots, more fake news.

Yes... we are a farming nation. Our farmers have little clue that it’s highly explosive. It’s highly explosive for plant growth though 😏

how many tonne's at each site 170 site's with ten ton per site & small amount of Diesel fuel is not GOOD a Wheat Silo with an oxygen bottle in the hands of a plumber. is really not a great mix

I mean, they know where it is at least and know that it's being stored safely. So it's fine as far as I'm concerned.

Here we go.. 🙄

According to theprojecttv, we don't need to worry because we're not in a covert war with Israel.

It's safe until it isn't then it's to late.

Omg ffs grow up. If it’s stored properly as it has been for years in Australia there is no issue. Stop scaremongering

Beirut blast raises fresh concern about Newcastle's much larger ammonium nitrate stockpileOrica's ammonium nitrate plant stores up to four times the amount that was in the Beirut explosion, but the company says it's safe and highly regulated. Ammonium Nitrate will take full responsibility if anything goes wrong. Chill. Don't store a port's fuel oil around it OR accept other people's contaminated stuff. Oh. Also. Don't store fireworks there either. Simples! Wont be a problem, just don't store ammunition, rocket fuel and missile warheads and you wont see a repeat of Beirut.

What is ammonium nitrate, the chemical that exploded in Beirut?Lebanon's prime minister said the blast was caused by around 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored near the city’s cargo port. Newcastle NSW has more stored in one area right in town😥 bsadams25 How much of Newcastle would be destroyed if their facility popped? And what of storages in other places?
