Australian journalist Ray Martin has spoken with Sky News host Paul Murray about the story of the country’s borders as explored in his new documentary, ‘The State We’re In: Australia’s Border Story’.

Mr Martin said before the COVID-19 pandemic we thought we were a “nation of federation” and suddenly we were “seven or six different countries” with states closing their borders.“I was going to be a history teacher, and so I thought I’d read all this stuff and I thought, ‘oh, good, but boring lawyers and surveyors’.

“Wrong – amazing human stories about, you know, where half the country was divided by the Pope back in 1494, that sort of stuff.”
