The campaign to change the date of Australia Day from January 26 is supported by less than a third of Australians although half believe the contentious date will be shifted within 10 years. AustraliaDay

The campaign to change the date of Australia Day from January 26 is supported by fewer than a third of Australians although half believe the contentious date will be shifted within 10 years.and Nine News found only 28 per cent of 1222 people surveyed nationally were in favour of shifting the date, while 48 per cent were opposed and a further quarter neither agreed or disagreed.

Those living in regional and rural areas were more likely to disagree with Australia Day being celebrated on a different date, with 58 per cent opposed compared to 42 per cent of those from metropolitan areas.Despite only a minority agreeing with the campaign to move Australia Day to an alternative date, 49 per cent believed the date was likely to shift within the next 10 years.

Ipsos director Jessica Elgood said it was interesting only 28 per cent supported a date change, but 41 per cent believed it would be important in improving the lives of Indigenous Australians and half believed change was coming. The most common response cited by those who opposed the date change was “we are all Australians” , followed by “It’s always been the 26th January” and the date was “when Australia was formed” .

Those who supported the date change said it was because they wanted to “make the day for everyone” , because January 26 was ‘Invasion Day’ , “It’s the right thing to do” and “to reconcile past hurts” .Credit:Poll participant Chloe Spillane, a 31-year-old recruitment worker from the Sydney suburb of Drummoyne, says she hasn’t celebrated Australia Day on January 26 for the past couple of years.

Keep your hands of Australia Day .

Is that a poll of readers of the The Australian. If so, it is deeply biased. I feel a real shift in the thoughts about Australia Day, by many Australians and I for one feel there is a need to change the date.

What's the bet a lot of the people saying 'invasion day' discussions should be silenced are the same that 1. Are 'free speech warriors' And 2. Think that climate change discussios should have 'all views heard'

This is a useful metric. About one-third of Australians don't understand basic cause and effect relational logic.

My dudes, the survey asked 1200 people. That in no way allows you to state what “Australians” support or don’t support. Trust me, the majority of the generation of young people who actually learnt in school what begun in this country on 26th January support the change.

Always Was, Always Will Be Changethedate

'Almost half oppose' Surely you mean 'more than 50% support changing the name or date' Stop trying to be a lame copy of Murdoch media

Anyone who says Australia was invaded and they are “living on stolen land” who doesn’t hand over the deeds to their house to an Aboriginal family and lease it back is a hypocrite.🤷‍♂️

Change the date because it is offensive to the first people. Don't change it because...🤷‍♂️ Yep, can really see both sides of this debate 🙈🙉🙊

Notice the ALMOST!!! So majority of Australians support the change.

When all the old ignorant farts fie & the younger voters get in the demographic that MP's start to take notice of

What would changing the date achieve, anyway? The new date would be just as contentious.

At one point the majority opposed recognising the indigenous as people, they opposed giving them the vote and they thought taking children from them was a good idea too. Things change, some people don’t. Government needs to encourage mature debate, not petty politics!

The way the tweet is written serves the purpose of Murdochracy

Every bloody year we are reminded how us westeners are all racist murderers. Thanks, no really, we appreciate been reminded of what our ancestors did. Really appreciate been generalised as racist murderers that only care about ourselves

How many indigenous people in the poll?

Our people lost their jobs, our livinf expenses are stupidly high, our graduates left University with massive debts, our environmental plan is rubbish, our education system is getting far worse, etc. - why the Gov want us to focus on AusDayDivision!?

The contention is an attempt to make current Australians ashamed of events that disposessed a society in 1788. Weaker societies thru' history have faded away. Most of the so called indigenous cohort are genetically mixed with the so called invaders. Lets put the past to bed.

Did you poll the country or just a few liberals

Wow. Just wow. I support a date change. Has reconciliation week taught people nothing? changethedate

Sloppy reporting, just fucking change the date out of respect

I thought Rudd had already said 'sorry'.

If it is so upsetting to some people, just change it and get back to enjoying the day. It is tainted now, right or wrong. Could redefine it in terms of our multicultural tradition at the same time. Pity the PM does not think things through, instead of acting on his 'shoulds'.

1,222 people is not 1/3 of the population. Were people polled from all over the country or just the North Beaches of Sydney?

This is not a surprise. The majority are happy with the date. That is all that matters.

Thank fk Twitter was invented gives these complete lefty fk tards a voice & a platform jog on see you all at work tomorrow

Politician’s have tried to take over the day and make it a political statement It’s now just a long weekend

The first fleet arrived on 24 January not 26th. It’s not the date people oppose it’s national pride and commemorating the nation itself. No date change will appease them

abolishAustraliaDay

1222 is a pretty small poll to run as the headline on the day before Australia Day!

Complaining about people complaining about the date is the easiest way BY FAR to get away with actually no having to enact any meaningful change. Advocates need to leverage the position rather than fall for the trap every God damn year.

Unfortunately history has shown us the majority of Australians are not always right

Democracy at it's best - rule by the minority.

👎

If you answer yes to indigenous descent in this years census, then answer a question on whether we should change the date. If the majority of indigenous Australians do want it changed, then let's change it. If not, then dont.

How about sacking AusHCUK for abandoning strandedaussies

This household is 100% changethedate 55

우리의 구원이 시작되는 천국은 권능의 나라입니다. 죄를 회개하십시오. 의로움과 거룩함을 따르십시오. 메시아께서 오십니다.

Why can’t they just say 28%? Or ‘a little over a quarter’ (which is more accurate than ‘a third’). Could it be that the Age wants the figure to be higher?

Why do Europeans like her keep on coming here and breeding here if they don't like the Australian fauna and flora? GO BACK TO WHERE YOU ALL CAME FROM!

So 52% are open to changing the date? InvasionDay

Almost half oppose campaign to change Australia Day: pollA new survey indicates there's a long way to go if a campaign is convince Australians of the need to change Australia Day from January 26 is to succeed | JewelTopsfield JewelTopsfield Will never change. Sorry! JewelTopsfield What it shows is journalists have no clue what most Australians think and no desire to find out. Ninefax needs to employ at least 50% who live in the suburbs and sack the rest. JewelTopsfield It needs re-definition. If it’s true it was only in 1988 we attached the day to captain cook,we can change again to redefine Aus culture to embrace our real history, putting indigenous Australians central to that story and celebration.Change the date is about a new understanding

Government negotiates with NT to almost triple Howard Springs capacity | Sky News AustraliaThe federal government is in negotiations with the Northern Territory government to almost triple the capacity of the Howard Springs facility in Darwin to take 2000 overseas travellers per fortnight up from 800.\n\nSky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell revealed Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has flagged his desire to have less international travellers to Melbourne following the latest quarantine leak.\n\n“State premiers and the federal opposition piling the pressure on to have more regional quarantine, the Howard Springs deal shapes as a circuit breaker,” Mr Clennell said.\n\n“When former top bureaucrat Jane Halton penned a report on quarantine for the federal government, she also suggested RAAF Learmonth, near Exmouth in Western Australia, as a potential surge or emergency site for quarantine. \n\n“Given this is near airports, this could be another option for the federal government, as it comes under pressure over the hotel CBD quarantine regime.” aclennell Why is noone talking about the elephant in the room. There is heaps of capacity. 1000s of US troops are flying into the NT, and no media is saying boo. ‘Diatribe of bilge’: Piers Morgan says he ‘doesn’t trust almost anything’ Meghan says | Sky News AustraliaFormer broadcaster Piers Morgan has described Meghan Markle’s comments during her recent interview with Oprah as a “diatribe of bilge” and says he will stand up for the “right to be allowed to have an opinion” following his resignation from ITV.\n\nThe breakfast show host's commentary followed a tell-all interview hosted by talk show host Oprah Winfrey where the Duchess of Sussex revealed she suffered suicidal thoughts during her time living and working as a senior royal.\n\nMr Morgan unleashed a barrage of criticism after the interview, questioning the legitimacy of Meghan's claims and later resigned from the program after refusing to issue an apology to the Duchess.\n\nHe said to press after the event, 'I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion. If people want to believe Meghan Markle that is entirely their right'.\n\n'I don't believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she's done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.\n\n“If I have to fall on my sword for expressing an honestly held opinion about Meghan Markle and that diatribe of bilge that she came out with in that interview so be it.'\n Don’t care what he says.
