This makes the restraint of Alice, Darling all the more remarkable and revelatory – a case for the seriousness of coercive control, in and of itself. To be sure, Kendrick’s Alice suffers visible symptoms from the gnawing stress of her relationship with Simon. The stress of lying to him about seeing her friends, of whom he disapproves, causes her to vomit; the loss of an earring, further evidence of her “badness”, precipitates a viscerally performed, devastating panic attack.

Alice Springs crime rate soars after alcohol ban liftsAlice Springs is back in the national spotlight as the town of around 26 thousand people sees a marked increase in crime and violence. MPs in the Northern territory are calling for a reintroduction of alcohol bans as more than 200 children, with some as young as five, are roaming the streets late at night. According to The Australian newspaper many of those kids are drinking alcohol, sometimes in the form of hand sanitiser diluted in soft drinks, or consuming deodorant, petrol or glue. It has been just over six months since the Stronger Futures laws lapsed meaning alcohol was suddenly legal for the first time in many Aboriginal town camps in 15 years. Much as I hate government restrictions in some cases the people have to be protected from legal drugs. Oxycodone for example is very restricted for reasons of addiction. Why is alcohol any different. Dumbest thing I ever saw and all for no benefit to anyone.
