Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says he’ll increase foreign aid spending in the region, as China and East Timor agree to sign a series of new agreements. | By CameronGooley auspol

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said he will “engage” with East Timor, after the South-East Asian nation agreed to sign a slew of new agreements with Beijing across areas including healthcare and economic co-operation.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong as they left for the Quad leader’s summit in Tokyo.

Blaming the previous Coalition government for Australia’s diminishing regional influence, Albanese said his government would increase foreign aid spending. The new government has wasted no time in trying to rebuild relationships between Australia and its neighbours. After being sworn in as the prime minister, Albanese almost immediately travelled to Tokyo for a meeting with the Quad countries, and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has already visited several Pacific Island nations.

CameronGooley 'Foreign Aid' is code for bribes

CameronGooley Throw more money away while Australian people cannot get a home or hospital bed. Pathetic. Grand stand overseas be useless at home.

CameronGooley You can try engaging with East Timor but the relationship will not be the same, specially after the spy scandal. Trust was broken. Even the ICJ ruled in favour of East Timor. Money will not help. CHINA has plenty of this. The French 'SUB'saga will not help. Trust was broken

CameronGooley Foreign aid = money to buy foreign governments.

CameronGooley “The former government cut foreign aid, cut engagement with our region, and we’re seeing some of the consequences of that play out” I don’t think foreign aid has been cut. Do you want to fact check this + include us vaccinating our pacific neighbours + undersea internet cable.

CameronGooley Of course he will. Money grows on trees for Labor

CameronGooley Spend it in Australia numnuts.

CameronGooley Whatever the path we should strengthen local regional ties wherever possible. It is in our national interest. We missed a massive opportunity (& failed a moral obligation) not to vaccinate less fortunate neighbours from COVID19 IMO. auspol insiders
