A diplomatic source in Brussels confirmed Australian officials had informed organisers that Albanese had declined NATO’s invitation to attend the Washington summit.

Criticised for his travel since he came to office, Anthony Albanese has only gone overseas once this year, to Papua New Guinea for Anzac Day.

US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said last month the White House was expecting Albanese to attend as well as Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida, South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeo and New Zealand prime minister Christopher Luxon.
