Anthony Albanese says there have been “extensive discussions” with Europe about a trade deal which had stalled because Australia was a “handbrake” on climate action under the previous government.

Mr Albanese arrived in Madrid for the NATO Leader's Summit after Australia was invited as an Enhanced Opportunities Partner.

And this afternoon, when I have further meetings, including with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, it will be a common theme that I will take to the bilaterals here in Madrid,” he told reporters.“There was one discussion only in the last 12 months,” he said.He detailed the “two impediments” which he believes halted previous discussions, including Australia’s stance on climate change.
