The Opposition Leader shouldn’t assume a well-crafted speech and a hungry look will allow him to walk into the top job | OPINION auspol

The election campaign has begun. With Parliament having closed its doors, fittingly sealed shut by an outbreak of COVID, the Labor Party has announced policies for skills and training and to boost funding for TAFE and hard-hit universities.. Set at the Wests Ashfield Leagues Club, in Sydney’s inner west, with the Labor faithful in attendance, it had the tenor of a campaign launch, complete with an inspirational speech and a snappy election slogan: A Better Future.

Albanese’s slogan and practice campaign launch were reminiscent of Bob Hawke’s campaign in 1983, when he was facing Malcolm Fraser, a three-term prime minister who’d proved unable to solve the pressing problems of that time, inflation and unemployment. Hawke’s role at the ACTU had been to settle seemingly intractable disputes rather than to instigate them. Most times, Hawke managed to bring unions and businesses together for mutually beneficial outcomes. Constantly on television, the cocky larrikin with a penchant for drinking and womanising had been the preferred prime minister in opinion polls long before he entered Parliament.Once elected to Parliament in 1980, Hawke had his eyes firmly fixed on the prime ministership.

Voters aren’t as familiar with Albanese, as they were with Hawke. He’s been a background noise in a national conversation dominated by other players. He’s largely watched from the sidelines as Morrison has been steadily diminished by rorts, wrongdoing and sheer incompetence and seen the Prime Minister whittled down even further by attacks from premiers, both Liberal and Labor.

More trash news from a defunct newspaper

I would vote for a dead dingo vs Morrison. At least the dingo could lie straighter than ScottyFromPhotoOps

And their lies the issue... he is trying and testing to listen to. Much like the 'King's Speech'... splutter slurp splutter. Albanese is an embarrassment to the nation.

Somehow I don’t think he assuming anything. BUT the fact he’s got well crafted *policy* and he’s not got a pack of crooks in his team, that gives him an edge. The Age back to its tradition of supporting the Tories I see.

L

Especially when you have papers like this ☝🏽 who openly hold fundraisers for the Liberal party and always run interference and propaganda for the PMO.

Guy with policies & ideas vs Guy with rorts & slogans

Calling either Morrison or albo leaders is discourteous to real leaders😎

Look to Premier Andrews for guidance towards a prosperous and progressive future. Hail Premier Andrews! Long live the Party!

The Costello’s age is at it again.

Damn-he should have gone to Bathurst !

Oh wow... To think the Aged would once upon a time, at least thinly veil it's biased.

What about good policy, will that do it?

If Labor love the CPRS why is it no longer policy

No, but the fact that the incumbent is an absolute turd is going to help. That, and decent policies put forward by the ALP.

It's obvious that Albanese is the leader we need, just not the leader the media want us to have. No doubt Murdoch, Costello and Stokes will work in lockstep with the LNP to promote Sideshow Scotty as their preferred candidate, regardless of his unsuitability for the role of PM.

I’m pretty sure Albanese knows that.

But going around a race track with you thumbs up is fine eh?

Is that a cheeky reference to his weight loss?

What hypocracy from the age. The election is not tomorrow. Labor has enough time to release its policy. CC has been announced and generally well accepted. Matters related to child care, TAFE, University has also been mentioned. Is Costello writing your opinion piece?

If media companies called out the publicity stunt politics of the likes of Morrison instead of revelling in the headlines they create. If they applauded someone announcing +give policy delivered in a respectful way. Then we would be all better off. But you prefer the buffoonery

You mob publish some absolute crap

And the present Prime Minister shouldn't have shafted Towke for preselection and shafted Dutton for the PM job so what's your point?

Of course our PM also thrives on Putinesque photo opportunities … with spin these two form the well-known strategy of propaganda. Sort of goose-like no?

Also has kept the Labor ship on an even keel for 3 years. He has balanced the pressure to step up with the desire to not spook the electorate. Experience counts and with some expansive policies cutting through, he has to face our PM’s ability to spin past many failures. auspol

Albo is a legend. You guys are not.

He is unfortunately too far to the left to be a viable alternative to Morrison. You can also include Plibersek. They will have a coalition with the Greens. God help us then!

The corruption, incompetence, petulance, laziness, cruelty, racism, misogyny and mendacity of the LNP aren't enough for you?

Maybe when Costello stops the bias in your news rag all other parties & independents will be covered fairly & the LNP propaganda will stop. But we shouldn’t assume a rat like him would act professionally…..

Fortunately there is integrity and a well crafted suite of policy So there's that.

He won’t assume that. Neither will his party. They will work hard to provide voters with a viable and progressive alternative against another term of relentless calamities and embarrassments that you have celebrated.

I don't think he assumes that

And so we see that Costello's purile pungent preposterous propaganda propagates perpetually.

Mr Magoo 22 ... sounds like bingo.

More to follow, watch this man as he steps up to the limelight and demonstrates his depth!

AlboMP ScottMorrisonMP JoshFrydenberg were able to listen and retain AAA status. Mild rise of inflation. Job markets rebound. Why? Education • Jobs • A plan for a fair go for families. If AlboMP follows other western democracies; he will fail at the next election.
