The aged care royal commission has heard about cases of workers stealing from residents, as it wraps up a week-long hearing about workplace issues.

Aged care workers have allegedly stolen residents' property, spiked one's food with a sedative and assaulted others, a royal commission has been told.

Queensland's health ombudsman Andrew Brown has detailed a dozen cases where immediate action has been taken against aged care workers by his office, since its inception in July 2014. They included allegations of an aged care worker spiking a resident's drink with a sedative and another crushing up unprescribed medication and putting it in their food, Mr Brown told the aged care royal commission in Melbourne on Friday.

Mr Brown said there were allegations of residents being assaulted, having their property and medication stolen and being subjected to fraud and financial exploitation. The royal commission on Friday wraps up a week-long hearing in Melbourne into the aged care workforce, hearing from witnesses including the federal health department secretary Glenys Beauchamp.
