BREAKING: A resident at an aged care home and a contract worker at a hotel quarantining returned travellers are among 21 new cases of the coronavirus recorded in Victoria overnight.

Twenty-one new cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Victoria in the past day including an elderly resident at an aged care home and a contract worker at a hotel quarantining returned travellers.

The Rosstown, a 53 bed residential aged care home in Carnegie in Melbourne's south-east, run by Glen Eira City Council, is in lock-down, with residents confined to their rooms while testing and deep cleaning is undertaken.Fifteen of the new cases are returned travellers. The number of cases of community transmission has risen by six, Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said.

Ms Mikakos told reporters on Wednesday many of the new cases were returned travellers from the subcontinent, including countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, which are experiencing exponential growth in COVID-19 cases. The hotel contractor who tested positive to COVID19 was working at the Standford Plaza Hotel in Melbourne's CBD, which is housing returned travellers.

"Work by contact tracing teams is underway," Ms Mikakos said. "The outbreak management team at the hotel is working with staff there and extensive deep cleaning is being undertaken." One of the new cases is a household contact of a patient at Monash Health. The other three are under investigation.

Mikakos is as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike....can’t tag her coz she blocks any1 that has a bad word to say... pathetic

Can’t trust these figures. Went to a drive thru test facility today, an hour long wait so lots of people were driving away.

'Fifteen of the new cases are returned overseas travellers' Why are we letting them into the country?

15 out of 21 are already quarantined from OS travel. It’s effectiveness surpasses the whining.

Sooner this one goes the better.........

Victoria is a shambles. Get on top of China flu before you infect the rest of the country. Dictator Dan has been the worst performing premier by a long long way

This is very much an aged care facility disaster and not a general community health emergency . This should have guided our response .

No outbreaks in shopping centres, pools or restaurants and pubs!! Always just the usual aged care, health care and hotels. Don’t lock up rest of community!!!

So returned travelers from India / Pakistan are the only ones that test positive. Should then guide us on whom to police quarantine ? If a returned passenger tests negative at the border they should be allowed to quarantine at home ! . How many end up in hospital ? Disclose !
