ANALYSIS: 'Age isn't the problem, ageism is': Turning 60 in Australia

about our nation's attitudes towards older people in its report, What's Age Got to Do With It?

The survey also found that those in the 40-61 year age group are most likely to encounter ageism in being turned down for a job, while those above 62 years of age will experience it by being "helped" without being asked. It certainly was in 1962, when the average life expectancy for an Australian man was just 67.84 years .

A couple of months before the pandemic hit, my class of 1979 at an all boys' state high school had a 40-year reunion dinner — alongside older baby boomers — so I had a chance to see up close what our generation is like.Compared to the early baby boomers, we are not very demonstrative — there weren't many hugs, tears or gushing emotions — and the sentimentality was definitely kept in check.

We also agreed that many of Australia and the world's pivotal moments in the 1960s and 70s are intertwined with our own childhood memories: from the change to decimal currency in 1966 , a man walking on the moon in 1969, Gough Whitlam's 'It's Time' election in 1972 and Australia's switch to colour television in 1975.

Firstly 60;is not old age. Secondly only retire when you have something better to do, because retiring to do nothing will shorten yourr life.

Western countries do not value wisdom or experience in comparison to Asia.

Was surprised this got past the ABC Millennial Editorial Mafia because it would have been a bit too long for them to focus on.

The retirement age has been raised from 65 yrs to 67. Meaning they've squeezed another 2 years out of us. It might be fine if you've worked behind a desk all your life..not so much if you've done otherwise. There is such a thing as 'burnout'..and it happens well before turning 67

I lost my job to forced redundancy and won an unfair dismissal dispute after 60yo and could not find suitable work, so as an Engineer I did whatever work I could. No one wants an over 60 employee so decades of high level experience was lost.

Yet a third of people over sixty live in poverty!

Boomers complaining about ageism is absurd. They have benefitted from ageism their entire lives. Wealthiest generation ever AND only generation to leave their kids WORSE OFF. How are these boomer anecdotes “analysis”? Do some actual research…
