When NSW Labor leader Chris Minns promised in January that a government led by him would embark on a year-long consultation with First Nations people on a treaty, Australia was a very different place. A month after Dutton delivered what would ultimately be a killer blow to the Yes vote, NSW Liberal leader Mark Speakman walked away from former premier Dominic Perrottet’s vocal support for a constitutionally enshrined Voice.But Speakman’s position did not wreak damage like that of his federal colleagues, and the NSW shadow cabinet agreed that MPs from the Liberals and Nationals could campaign freely for either the Yes or No vote “in line with their own views and those of their community”.
