A 64-year-old man who has been on the run for almost 30 years after breaking out of jail has handed himself into police.

Police say Darko Desic, then 35, escaped from Grafton Correctional Centre between 7pm on July 31 and 7am on August 1, 1992.At the time, efforts to locate him were unsuccessful, and he reportedly lived undetected in Sydney’s northern beachesDetectives from the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad’s corrective services investigation unit have since charged the man with escaping from lawful custody.

He was refused bail and appeared at Central Local Court on Tuesday where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court on September 28.The Morning Edition newsletter is our guide to the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.

daniellamariewh Ronnie Biggs did the same, needed free medical care and 3 squares a day, so he handed himself in after being on the run for decades to the UK police,

I guess he got to that age where he needs his free medical.
