Former Gold Coast and Carlton big man Daniel Gorringe is thanking his lucky stars that something inside his mind told him not to drive himself into a tree. The two-time AFL delisted player was at his lowest ebb after being sacked by Carlton at the end of 2017 and saw no way out. “I got in my car and put the pedal down to the ground, aiming for a tree,” he said on Straight Talk with Mark Bouris.
“I got to a point where every day just wasn’t worth being up for. I was in bed, I was crying, I didn’t have any mates because they were all at footy and their lives were going so well — and my life was so opposite to all of them.” He said his mental demons were “bubbling away” for a while until he reached a threshold and decided he’d had enough. “I haven’t told the story about it, so it’s obviously very open, me saying it now,” he said.
