A comfortable lead over the injury-hit Western Bulldogs was reduced to just eight points with minutes remaining at Marvel Stadium when Hayden McLean was gifted a goal from right in front after controversial 50m penalty.
Dramatic 50m penalty seals Sydney’s victory. McLean marked right on the arc but, as he sought to protect the ball, had it knocked out of his hands by Laitham Vandermeer. The umpire wasted no time paying the 50m penalty, with boos raining down from Dogs fans. Matthew Richardson, watching from home, teed off on social media: “Soft as these 50s. Is this how you really want the game to look?” Replays told Collingwood premiership player Dale Thomas that Vandermeer “had a fair play” at the ball.
