Australia’s first loss of the T20 World Cup and their first ever to Afghanistan puts them at risk of early elimination; even if they beat India in their next game they won’t be guaranteed a place in the semi-finals.

The reverberations, felt in St Vincent where Rashid Khan’s men had soundly defeated Australia, were an appropriately seismic accompaniment to events at the Arnos Vale Ground. For seismic they undoubtedly were. This result not only put the semi-final progression of Mitchell Marsh’s team in danger, but confirmed that Afghanistan are a major force in world cricket – regardless of the sporting sanctions they face.

“I can sleep better now. That was a night which didn’t let me sleep,” Rashid said of the World Cup game last year. The decision to leave out Mitchell Starc for Ashton Agar, based on the likelihood of a turning track, will be debated given the left-arm paceman’s vaunted reputation. So too will the decision to chase after Marsh won the toss. Agar, though, bowled tidily, and it was in the field where the Australians fell down most visibly. Marsh estimated that Afghanistan were allowed to get 20 runs too many.

Apart from Maxwell, no other batter made more than 12 – with a quartet of vital wickets being taken by the change bowler Gulbadin Naib, the last of eight bowlers called upon by Rashid to defend a target of 149.
