Buffel grass is valued as a form of cattle feed, but others say it poses unacceptable threats to the environment. In the coming months, a committee will rule on whether or not it should be declared a weed.

The NT government will establish a Weeds Advisory Committee to investigate buffel grass. In three months the committee will make a recommendation about whether or not the grass should be declared a weed.

"If they come to me and say, 'If you declare it a weed, this is going to be a very detrimental impact on the pastoral industry' … then we won't go ahead with a declaration," she said.Ms Worden said it was unrealistic to attempt to eradicate buffel from central Australia. "I've watched the buffel invade areas of the national parks and the harvest areas out on country," she said."A lot of our trees are tolerant to fire because our native grasses have a lighter burn, but the buffel is a hot burn, so it destroys the acacia trees."Arid Land Environment Centre's Alex Vaughan welcomed the announcement and hoped it led to buffel being declared a weed."This is a very reasonable step.
