But behind the scenes, they are backed by powerful leaders on the left and right who are careful to avoid any controversial divisions. While the AMWU lacks membership numbers – it was gutted by the exit of the car manufacturing industry – the union commands respect for its historic and institutional role on the more progressive side of politics.Murphy, seen by colleagues as an impressive speaker, is at the forefront of using Labor’s new multi-employer bargaining laws.
Bullock operates behind the scenes but doesn’t feature on the floor. He downplays his factional role at a national level, but as one official said: “Bullock influences everything.”CFMEU national secretary Zach Smith, the young public face of the militant union that has pledged to shift Labor to the left on economics, also works with the faction to influence the ACTU agenda.
On the right, Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association national secretary Gerard Dwyer organises the faction’s resolutions. While it has a conservative reputation, the union has been taking a more activist approach in recent years and was behind some of the biggest resolutions at the congress, including a campaign for five days’ annual leave for all workers.
