Acting chief medical officer Paul Kelly says the vast majority of newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in NSW are linked to at least three venues as Sydney's Northern Beaches is placed into lockdown

19/12/2020Acting chief medical officer Paul Kelly says the vast majority of newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in NSW are linked to at least three venues as Sydney's Northern Beaches is placed into lockdown. Sydney’s Northern Beaches residents will be placed in lockdown from 5pm today and will only be allowed to leave their homes for essential services and work as 23 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in the last 24 hours. The tough restrictions will be in place until midnight Wednesday.

Mr Kelly said the current COVID cluster which is centred around the Northern Beaches are linked to at least one of these venues: the Avalon RSL, the Avalon Bowling Club, and Anytime Fitness in Avalon. "We have been working on the hypothesis, or they have been with our assistance, that this cluster has come from a passenger that arrived into Australia on 1st December from the US and the molecular genomic testing of the virus suggests that is where it probably started,” Mr Kelly said.
