For five years Alex has begged ACT Housing to repair her derelict home. They didn't, and now it has been condemned — but the mother of four has not been offered an alternative place to live.

Alex and her four children have been living in a home where lead paint flakes into the baby's cots and broken plumbing floods the carpet of her son's bedroom.

Despite the property falling into disrepair under the management of ACT Housing, the agency did not provide any alternative accommodation options in the letter."What am I going to do if I actually have to leave my property? Where am I going to go? It is just going to be me and my kids in my car?" Alex said. The mother said in the past five years she had contacted ACT Housing more than 50 times about repair issues, in particular the flaking lead paint on every ceiling in the home.

For a month Alex tried to live in different hotel bedrooms while still returning home to keep up the property and feed her dog. ACT Housing also offered Alex temporary properties, but she said one option was unsafe for her autistic son, who is prone to escaping, as it backed onto a main highway, and another Alex said was so small that the four children would have had to sleep in one room, and herself in the kitchen. The notice of eviction came as a shock.

ACT Housing could not comment on individual cases, but in a statement said the agency had a 96 per cent occupancy rate, and could only offer available properties that may not meet all of a tenant's requirements.

Where is/ are the father(s) ?

Landlords and governments have obligations to maintain a property. I’m leaving one right now that’s infested with mould that they refuse to fix. I’m lucky though. I have the means to move on. Some don’t. Hopefully this story will get ACT housing off their arse.

So according to comments people in this situation basically deserve what they get is that it? What a heartfelt group of haters

There is more to this story than meets the eye.

Thats what happens when librals run the country . People suffer

Who pays for the tatts and piercings? 4 kids & not a father (how many) in sight, hmmmm? Whatever happened to responsible journalism, but no one could ever accuse OUR ABC of anything other than tabloid shit.

Stop having kids for Christ

I hope this news article helps Alex and her kids a safe and stable home. Stay strong Alex!
