Police around the southern English coastal town of Bournemouth urged people to stay away as thousands defied coronavirus social distancing rules and flocked to local beaches on what was the UK's hottest day of the year so far.
A "major incident" was declared on Thursday, local time, for the largely rural area that can only be navigated in most places by car on narrow lanes. This gives additional powers to local authorities and emergency services to tackle the issue.Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council said services were "completely overstretched" on Thursday, as people sought the sanctuary of the seaside on a day meteorologists confirmed as the hottest of 2020. The mercury hit 33.
Extra police patrols have been brought in and security is in place to protect waste collectors who the council said faced "widespread abuse and intimidation" as they emptied overflowing bins. Roads, which were gridlocked into the early hours, now have signs telling people the area is full, according to the council.
"The irresponsible behaviour and actions of so many people is just shocking and our services are stretched to the absolute hilt trying to keep everyone safe," she said. "We have had no choice now but to declare a major incident and initiate an emergency response."
How is this any different from the mass protests of a few weeks back? The answer must surely be that its not.
It was a black lives matter protest. Why are you racist?
What evidence is there that the virus is transmitted in circumstances of fresh air and sunshine?
They don't have many beaches eah
Personally, I would have stayed at home, but to be fair, the latest studies seem to show the chances of catching it outdoors are slim to none.
But it’s okay for the PM’s advisor to break the rules, and mass gatherings at the recent protests. Poor leadership not coming down hard on Dom, now the public just think “screw it, I’ll do what I want too”
Stupid people! Selfish people!
What was the point of any UK lockdown given these scenes!!
Bondi Beach?
Dominic Cummings, come on down!
Ok let’s be a bit fair to the Brits here. Yes they are going through a once in a lifetime pandemic but they were just blessed with their one hot day in a lifetime. Do I go to the beach or stay home
33° is beautiful weather. I know they’re not used to it but it’s not like it’s over 40°. Pandemic people. Stay away from others.
Well it’s not only mad dogs and Englishmen going out in the midday sun the Americans did it in Florida and look what’s happening there now, watch this space!!!
The PM BorisJohnson cannot be blamed for this carelessness. He warned against it enough and asked to think about the consequences.
Isn’t this how natural selection works?
