The ABC's extensive coverage of bushfires ravaging the country threatens to push the taxpayer-funded news organisation into more budget strife with emergency broadcasting events on track to double in 2020 | JennieDuke

There have been 670 emergency broadcasting events for the 2019-20 financial year so far, an ABC spokesman said, compared to 371 for the full 2018-19 financial year. In 2017-18 there were 256 events, a figure that had been surpassed by mid-September 2019.

"No request has been made by the ABC for additional funding to support their emergency broadcasting services," the spokeswoman said. The ABC has indicated an interest in more funding for broader regional services, particularly as private media companies struggle to keep newsrooms open in rural Australia amid declining audiences and advertising revenue heading online.

JennieDuke ourABC is a national broadcaster for a reason. In a time of crisis it is needed more than ever. Fund it properly. We need to campaign against fascist/right wing conservatives who don't like their neutral/objective work.

JennieDuke A man with spectacles was a gay, formerly he investigated Morrison but after Morrison looked at with bigeyes, he surrendered

JennieDuke ABC is the only positive aspect of this

JennieDuke I just feel like getting rid of the ABC ..I know when there is a Rort on.i mean come on the ABC isn't nearly what it used to be. Radio is alright but seriously who watches tv anymore.

JennieDuke Yet ScottyfromMarketing must protect the surplus. No nation repairing for us.

JennieDuke “These national emergency broadcasts are not part of the ABC's charter requirements, though are considered to be of significant public benefit by the government and communities across the country, and come out of the existing $1 billion-a-year budget.” Why not?

JennieDuke the least important aspect of the bushfire crisis

JennieDuke ABC using fire coverage to push political narrative. Little coverage on arsonists, Green councils preventing Hazard Reduction or how folks should prep for weather emergencies.

JennieDuke Buy two less submarines

JennieDuke Budget pressure? Well, call me in as a consultant, & for free I’ll give u a list of staff to let go & programmes to cut. I can GUARANTEE I’ll save a bucket of money. (Hint-Tingle & Law - for starters - start packing your desks). I have several others in mind, as I’m sure do you!

JennieDuke You could crowd fund. Or do a bunnings sausage sizzle

JennieDuke Time for a self funding Telethon? Do we still contribute just under $30 pa (.08c p/day), each? We're happy to up our contribution a little ... 😁.

lazblue JennieDuke Let them run out of money...

JennieDuke Wow! The ABC seeking more money. How surprising!

JennieDuke They could probably siphon some funds for ABC. They don't seem to be using it properly

JennieDuke Bring back the mighty auntie . FFS

JennieDuke If not for the ABC's awesome coverage, both radio and TV, given the loss of communication bands for mobiles, we'd have a lot more fatalities. They are doing a PHENOMENONAL job 👏👏👏

JennieDuke How about adequately funding it! Instead, all it gets is cuts which only makes it less credible and triggers the haters. When a country only spends 1 billion on the National Broadcaster and 6 billion in Franking Credits, something is truly amiss. Defund the charity IPA instead.

JennieDuke Basket case.

JennieDuke It’s an invaluable network it must be allowed to cover these sorts of events without the worry of lack of funding from the government. auspol2020

JennieDuke Be a brave LNP party to not stump up for the ABC after the past week is so. Australia needs the ABC strong

JennieDuke Just cancel any show on ABC 'Comedy'

JennieDuke just get rid off reporters in small towns in the bush

JennieDuke DefundABC

JennieDuke Well let's add this to the list of this Scott Morrison can do but hasn't thought of.

JennieDuke Increase the damn budget then!

JennieDuke what no volunteering

JennieDuke Need infusion of cash from feds

JennieDuke The Govt can start by increasing. It’s budget then

JennieDuke hey madam chairman suggest you make waves now for extra funding now the Nationals need the ABC. Otherwise turn off the regional stations. Wonder which National MPs agreed to reduce the ABC budget.

JennieDuke Make the ABC a subscription service & see how long they last

JennieDuke Axe one of its four channels. Really... only needs 1 or 2.

JennieDuke Having just gotten home from being trapped north of Batemans Bay, the ABC was our only source of information and a lifeline for most people we met. I will be protesting strongly against any further cuts to their budget in 2020

JennieDuke Cut non essential programming, there’s a heap of it. The idea they can’t serve the Australian people with $1 billion per annum is ludicrous.

JennieDuke This is worrying as fires may last till May. IlovetheABC
