Actor and writer Ra Chapman’s new series explores the Korean-Australian adoptee experience through an unlikely lens: the romcom.

A series exploring the Korean-Australian adoptee experience from a personal perspective sounds like standard ABC fare, right? Perhaps with archive footage, a melancholic soundtrack and a progression of talking heads and various experts., a six-part comedy from Korean-Australian actor and playwright Ra Chapman instead features frank dating scenes, a hyperrealistic sex doll and K-pop dance routines.

Chapman and co-writers Harvey Zielinksi , Michelle Lee and Clare Atkins have created a frank comedy that doesn’t shy away from the serious issues. “A romcom is one of the threads that we really wanted to have,” says Chapman. “But there are a lot of deeper themes of love and struggles with connection.

Chapman, who met her birth father 10 years ago, and visits him in Korea every couple of years, was also adamant that real members of the community be involved; in a scene where Jane attends an adoptee dinner, most of the actors are real-life adoptees.
