Several big-name ABC presenters are in the running to take over the unenviable gig, which has seen a revolving door of hosts since the departure of long-time presenter Tony Jones in 2019.
This would begin from May 29, as Grant is expected to host Monday evening’s program as usual where he will potentially provide more detail on his decision about his future on Q+A. Given Grant’s fierce criticism of the broadcaster’s lack of Indigenous representation on ABC programming, ex-Sky News Australia reporter Dan Bourchier has also been floated as a replacement.
In an extraordinary column published to the ABC’s website on Friday, the 59-year-old journalist announced his departure from the Q+A program while accusing the ABC of “institutional failure” for not supporting him in the wake of the broadcaster’s coronation coverage. “I was not the producer nor presenter of the coronation broadcast yet every newspaper article accusing the ABC of bias has carried my image. I am writing this because I will not have people depict me as a person of hate.”
"Stan Grant has stated that he has not felt publicly supported. For this, I apologise to Stan. The ABC endeavours to support its staff in the unfortunate moments when there is external abuse directed at them."
