In 2014, when Greatermans closed in Zimbawe’s capital, it echoed the economic decline of the country. Now a vibrant and inclusive cultural rebirth is under way at the downtown site

has seen a vibrant rebirth this month. Most of the old Greatermans building was closed in 2014 as shoppers abandoned Harare’s central business district for suburban malls. Its parent company Meikles opened one of its Pick n Pay grocery stores on the ground floor but closed off the upper three floors.

After independence in 1980, Greatermans offered upmarket shopping for both black and white, with the store’s generous credit terms across affiliate companies Barbours and Meikles enabling many in Harare to buy the trappings of an affluent lifestyle from 35 departments of furniture, clothing, cosmetics and electronics.

We came up here, and it was so dusty that you could see your footprints in the dust. But this space is magical“I’ve always been interested in the arts and come from a very artistic family,” she says. “When I joined the NAC, I talked with the board members about how we don’t have space for arts. One of them mentioned this dream space. We came up here, and it was so dusty that you could see your footprints in the dust. But this space is magical.

“I was a student, and there were all these empty spaces. The best exhibitions and parties were going on in these makeshift spaces. That’s why, whenever I see an empty building in Harare, I’m amazed. I see all the opportunities and potential, especially when it’s such a beautiful space like the top floor of Greatermans.Mueller adds: “The skylights are amazing. It’s such a unique space for Zimbabwe.

‘Cultural weirdness’: Douglas Murray slams trans girl experiencing ‘period pain’Author Douglas Murray has slammed a viral video of a transgender girl experiencing period pain, claiming it is “absolute nonsense” and deeply offensive to men, women and “anyone who has got a brain”. He said people can’t get period pains if they do not have a uterus and people like this transgender girl are “making everyone look like fools”. “What we see is of course this cultural weirdness going on in our time, it is a form of mass psychosis, a form of mental breakdown,” he told Sky News host Rita Panahi. “And among other things, a way in which young people who don’t see many prospects for themselves for being interesting can claim to be interesting.” Who cares? And this is ‘newsworthy’? How can a male get uterus pain? 🤔 Insane Oh seriously if that man had period pain he wouldn't be banging around like that he would think he was DYING and go to a hospital or medical professional. Real women take drugs and just get on with life. Massive fail mate no academy award for you....
