A Labor MP has called for school leavers to undertake a year of mandatory civil service in disaster response, saying bushfires demand a 'mobilisation of will' akin to during World War II.

and the median age of Rural Fire Service members in NSW is 50.

"I have been particularly struck by the ageing of the volunteers," Dr Kelly said. "The bottom line is we need younger people getting on board along with much higher numbers generally." If recruiting campaigns failed, he said, Australia ought to consider a national service model in which high school graduates would do a year of CDC service full time and then be required to maintain their participation when conditions demanded it until the age of 40.

"In some ways this required effort is similar to the way nations under risk of nuclear attack had to organise civil defence during the Cold War," Dr Kelly said. "Now we are in effect in a very hot war."Dr Kelly said he acknowledged his proposal would be seen as controversial, but argued it was important to start a discussions of how Australia could manage the effects of a changing climate even as he urged the government to do more to lower CO2 emissions.

After mounting criticism of its response to the bushfire crisis, the Morrison government has announced some measures similar to what Dr Kelly is calling for, but on a lower scale, including

Yeah that’s right let’s make the kids clean up the bloody mess caused by generations of denial, greed, selfishness, self inteeest and short sighted leadership. Good one 🤬

As a response, if they want to implement such a bill, how about this. All MP's, will have to undertake a period of mandatory volunteer service (1-2 weeks a year perhaps) within their terms in parliament? Have them lead by example for once, instead of hiding behind their titles.

Probably the most decent member of federal LNP but this ? Work for the Dole ?

How about u do some remove that smirk of ur face buster

Mobilise YOUR will to stop climate change

What is required is for Liberals Nats and Labor to ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE. Stop being beholden to mining companies and water thieves and start serving the Australian people

Best idea Labor have had in years. This should be a bipartisan shoe-in

Go away.

Not until they ask for it themselves. Unfair for people to suggest forced labour they won't be eligible to do themselves.

So they can bash arsonists?

There is credit to his idea. Israeli, Swedish, Norwegian youth have a compulsory 1-2 year military service at the age of 18. These can lead to further opportunities in military employment. Hate to say it, but some of our youth probably need a bit of a grip on reality.

The kids aren’t making it hotter. They’re doing everything to get govt to act on climate. You politicians need to step up. Don’t make the kids clean up your mess! ap4ca StrikeClimate Fridays4future

Climate change* will require a mobilisation akin to ww2

Sending a large group of naive young people into a disaster zone with supervision from agencies that are already stretched in terms of resources3amd organisation? Come on AustralianLabor & MikeKellyofEM.....you can do better than this. Utter stupidity.

'Mandatory civil service', 'national service', 'call up' - call it what you will, conscription is conscription. This requires more than a 'let's force teenagers to do this for peanuts' solution. It requires a professional, on-going national effort.

While you're at it, how about every person on newstart? While I say this in jest, as a long term unemployed person, I'd do it! Much better idea than that stupid useless work for the dole failure.

What's the point? Thanks to Australia's refusal to accept climate change, their parents are willing to live in what's now kindling. AustraliaFires

I’d settle for politicians turning up for work.

peasley_mark Let’s just be like many other countries of our population and have compulsory national service after year 12.

Sorry but this is a knee jerk reaction to the crisis. We need a paid pathway for firefighters. This demands well funded courses.

Great idea but who can control that many teenagers?

RonniSalt A good idea. I am sure a lot of young people would welcome the idea.

Imagine the pile-on if that came from the LNP. 🙄

not a bad idea at all .Young people ned this to survive and the future .Not sure I like the mandatory bit nor the reference to war .It could beter expressed as a social reaponsibility preparing them to cope with a very uncertain future in climate mitigation and adaptation .

Look I know everyone is raw and angry and mourning. I personally want to know how it got to this - what could I have done more to avert this moment. Many kids in the cities are removed from the bush & don't even understand the depth of what we have lost/are loosing. Let's talk..

I suspect rich kiddies will get 'bone spurs' 😳

Although I’m sympathetic to increasing civic mindedness, how will teens feel about risking their lives defending homes they will never be able to afford?

Totally agree

His moustache is super creepy

Good idea but also mandatory jobs from year 10-12 should be forced so they can gain experience before leaving school too. Government should pay companies to hire. President Duterte had this done in Davao Philippines.

Why just teens?

And - one of the best things we can do for Earth - Plant Trees 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳

Will that include politicians and the 1%ers children also or just everyone elses kids?

It's a good idea. A similar scheme works well in Denmark.

RonniSalt Seeing as out Polys on Sat for 50 days/365 they should perform these duties too. They are getting paid by our taxes and you know civic duty.

How about all those with free franking credits and negative geared houses get off their fat arse and do some free work! Pay us back for all the free tax concessions you get even though you're already rich.

He does have a point. All those climate change protesters particularly.

Why doesn’t he lead by example ? laborpartyfornannystate How about selfdetermination for adults in Australia ? FFS

RonniSalt Wow. That is a vote winner. He gets my vote for someone who is dumber than ScottyFromMarketting

School leavers meaning all - male, female and all those not Australian citizens?

Mick_Cook Based on these comments no wonder, this country has got problems. Everything is someone else's problem or job. Ever thought of serving others before yourself? plenty of recent exemplars to look at RFS etc.

This man is a virgin

Tax churches and acknowledge and act on climate change with the money - let school leavers makes their own choices

So the labour government wants to train and educate the youth but not the bureaucrats how control what gets contracted out .

RonniSalt Teens doing the dirty work for generations of mismanagement. Folk of retirement age supposed to retrain and stay in the workforce. Pollies doing SFA.

Really - getting teenagers to clean up messes caused by boomers? Yes let’s put young people more at risk because we don’t act on climate change

The most apalling idea ever to generate from Labor. To put teens in the danger zone or to even push for mandatory civil service suggests that Labor has lost its way. On offer, strange patches of ludicrousness stuck on LNP's devastation. Coal's still alright then?

snurb_dot_info Aim to treat the causes of the disease before we force kids to clean up our war wounds, thanks.

But why can't we have a professional civil defence force with reservists like we do for the ADF? Also I have been lobbying my MP Ted O'Brien to just set up a fit for purpose bridging and coordination mechanism to deal with evolving climate threat and was refused meeting.

RonniSalt Here's a better idea. Stop subsidising mining. Commit to no new coal projects and Stop Adani. Retrain mining (and car) industry workers for emergency response work -- and pay them and other emergency services workers properly to do it. Conscripting kids is not a first option.

No Mr. Kelly voluntary only

Lol

I do hope he's not thinking of linking it to the receipt of Benefits? Because, just like the dole, that would be unconstitutional, aka illegal.

List down as well parents of arsonists 👍👍👍👍

Please read the FB link in article before jumping to comclusions. does Mike injustice. The initial proposal is for a voluntary CDF w pay & benefits, on lines of DF Reserves . Many other excellent wide ranging ideas discussed well worth reading.

I would like to see the type of mandatory military training they have in Switzerland. Everyone does it and has to front up for a couple of weeks a year as a refresher.

RonniSalt An excellent idea. Six months training for all, then 6 months on call. Could help in fires, drought, storms, floods, many other tasks.

So these people will be guaranteed salary equivalence for the year of service and then guaranteed immediate employment in their profession after the year? I doubt it ... simply another outrageous ill-conceived stunt from a politician trying to make a name for self

Great, just what we need in the middle of a bushfire: lots of people milling about who don’t get want be there. There seems to be a lot of talking heads who just don’t get the whole volunteerism ethos

If there's work to be done it should be a bonafide paid job! Why should young people clean up our mess for free?

RonniSalt How about mandatory emergency service for MPs first? Another politician ready to sacrifice our youth. How about some like the ADF Reserves, but for civil disaster response. Mike Kelly had some interesting thoughts on this

Should not be compulsory, should receive a high level of training with an appropriate salary and be permanent. In other words a national fire response team

Why not? Local people with basic fire training to deal with minor fires, forget the climate change is fake rubbish, these fires are going to be a regular event.

Ok boomer🤷‍♂️

NO. Build and fund the disaster response that we need. That'll create career opportunities for those who WANT to join. Instead of appealing to ridiculous old-school mentalities. AlboMP, please get real.

butnotmykids amiright?

Sure. As long as he does it first.

RonniSalt No!!!!!!! You need to restore the budgets of the Professional services and listen to them. Fool!!!!!!!

Idiot

Climate change disasters are going to get worse and worse - many Australians will die - we need to get ready, to survive...

Wouldn’t it be great if the example, of say the Minister for Emergency Response to lead young people in this regard but it fucking off to Europe as soon as the job you have is actually required.

When will MPs be doing their bit?

AND THEY SHOULD ALL GET A HAIRCUT!

Great suggestion....definitely room for more conversation on this topic 👍

How about we treat the climate emergency like it’s a world war and all work together to fix the issue.

What is it about some people that always makes them think of ‘National service.’ There’s rarely any real thought or planning, they just think it sounds good. Donal trump school of policy making.

Hmm. I also notice that many volunteer firefighters are boomers. But you know, ‘ok boomer’.

That idea is not leadership. It's authoritarian. This disaster has showcased the amazing skills of the best in disaster management. Offer properly funded tertiary education and follow it up with real and well-paid jobs.

Not really a good idea Mike. Teenagers need to get on with their lives , finish school and build careers. Why not recruit retirees who would like to have a part time job and can’t get one?

If they are paid and chose to do it young people might value this experience.

This is a good idea. Young people in our community learning how to save lives and help with putting out fires.. They will be holding a hose not a gun..

Is this an OK BOOMER moment or what? We have saddled our youth with a climate emergency, sky high house prices and student debts. Extraction industries pay stuff all tax and get sweetheart deals for water et al. Yeah make the kids fix it!

RonniSalt Fuckwit

When you want to mandate teenagers to have more responsibility than billion dollar companies.

I think you’ll find forcing people to do things kinda cuts across the grain of what a free society is meant to be about.

What about allowing those getting Centrelink assistance who are willing and give them extra $ instead of punishing them for wanting to volunteer?

RonniSalt Never going to happen.

Add to that creative responses to global warming and he’s on a winner. Then maybe we won’t need to deal with so many disasters.

A Labor MP pushing for mandatory........ 😂🤣😂🤣😂 Albos wondering if it's worth a vote or two.... Mandatory...🤣😂🤣😂

RonniSalt Have to disagree. This sort of work (conscription) is not for everyone. Our kids di not come off a conveyor belt. There are round pegs that will not fit in your square hole. You will destroy some of our youth. This is knee jerk lazy thinking

RonniSalt This man should join the LNP. Forced labour is not the way to cope with disaster.

RonniSalt Well it’s bloody well come to this then.

So it's not enough to destroy the planet that we leave to our kids, now you want to force them* to risk their lives fighting the consequences of your neglect. * not the rich ones of course, they'll all have bone spurs

The level of ignorance is astounding.

'hmm who should we put into harm's way? ... Ah, I've got it: our young!'

RonniSalt There were lots of thoughtful strategies in this blog post. Interesting what gets the headlines.

RonniSalt As apposed to school leavers and adults doing the same work, being remunerated at a good level. Why the fuck do we want labour to be free in a disaster?

How about those who drive 4wds around the city be forced to do civilian service.

Or you could seek to fund rural firefighting services... and pay them ... and call it a job?

RonniSalt So basicly: Risk the lives of the young to clean up after the old. How about he picks up a fucking hose.

RonniSalt Is it the mo or hair that does this?

RonniSalt Wonder how many here have bothered to read the full Facebook post? auspol MorrisonFires

RonniSalt Sorry but if you’re paying untrained conscripts - why aren’t you paying volunteer professional firefighters. Dumb Mike Kelley, dumb. Best you resign and take that job in Silicon Valley.

RonniSalt Fuck why do we need Labor when we’ve got LNP, IPA and the MSM. Declaire a one party state and be done with it,

RonniSalt JFC you spend half your free time doing 'LNP needs to be thoroughly trounced at the next election' stuff on social media and then Labor comes out with idiocy like this.

It would be a year longer than most politicians do...

This is an idea worth considering.

Nothing says Australian values like being forced to do something. It’s usually the LNP demanding that policies be inflicted on others that won’t affect them personally...

NO.

RonniSalt He has suggested as perhaps one of the ideas that we should contemplate. Let's try to view it as he said it.

How about we giveb all the boomers a take and get them working.

Good idea, first job, close the coal mines.

Sorry mate that won’t get you elected

ben_wyndham did you write this press release for Dr Mike? 🤣

Sure. That will help the social/emotional and physical health of developing humans. NOT. You fascist fool

Not a bad idea as long as they're paid appropriately & not 'newstart' conditions.

Hmm. I get your point but OS holidays, climate change denials, retrospective let's do it betters, WMD, GST we'll never have, Telstra, power, Snowy, Water, Coal.. It's hard to sell that one.

Great way to appear unelectable Labor. You can't out- fascist the fascists in power already.

Absolutely not....my generation caused this problem. Why should the upcoming generation be conscripted to attempt to remedy what we did..

No.

Following a proud tradition of burying poorly trained 18 year olds who didn’t want to be there.

How about a year of building solar power plants and electric vehicle recharging stations.

😳

bferry2004 Don’t go on strike to protest for action on climate change, but you know what, instead of a gap year why don’t you spend a year cleaning up a climate disaster that everyone BUT you had a hand in. Ffs

Only viable if the government rolls out a proper response to climate change including a ban on new coal. Increases Newstart to a living wage. Then it may be feasible to look at a year of service. Also throw in free tuition. But before that, you’re dreaming.

Sounds a bit like conscription. Does Mike know the history of Australian ‘s attitude to conscription?

Straight from schoolies into armies.

FFS. So punish the younger generation even more for the lack of action on climate change by millennial's, politicians, etc

Hey not the worst idea and worth considering. Also what about people being paid a top up amount of they where on welfare benefits to help out during times that they could help. Not all the time but for 2 to 4 weeks a year maybe

Nah!

I'd consider some of this after the ALP gave all their fossil fuel donations since May 2019 to an environmental charity (Not the GBRF) & banned ex-pollies and staffers from working with any fossil fuel interest.

This is a bad idea

I have two two teen children. I would encourage them to help out but never in my wildest dreams would I demand that they clean up a mess that my parents generation (the generation who got it all on a platter) caused. I would be proud however if they decided to help.

There is a case for a number of forms of National Service including Military corps, Disaster corps and Service Corps for both men and women. Singapore, Taiwan & South Korea currently have universal national service for men. However there needs to be a number of service options.

Better yet, chuck anyone who's ever had any dealings with Rupert Murdoch into the fires.

Its his generation that stymied action to prevent climate change. Get them to fight the fires, as it doesn't matter if they die in the process.

Not a fan of forcing people to do stuff.

They won't go without wifi

Clean up your own shit Mike

Whilst politicians flat out dismiss/refuse to take any meaningful action on climate change... sounds fair 🖕

You know all those kids whose futures we are ruining by ignoring climate science? Let's make them into our little fire-fighting slaves to help mitigate the problem we caused!

Maybe all the underage kids committing crimes. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Labor’s dodgiest looking MP but I guess you can’t judge a book by its cover...

Nup

No.

How about we make boomers do a year of mandatory civil service in disaster response since their decision to destroy the environment and refuse to stop climate change has led to these devastating bushfires

Not sure if it’s more surprising that an ALP MP suggested this or that the ALP MP in question wasn’t Joel Fitzgibbon.

We’ll fight your climate fires if you stop mining and burning coal... agreeable?

Good! I agree! It will make them real human beings! Not like that useless Greta chic!

You mean the generation you’ve continually shafted at every turn, some of whom are now working 5 gig-economy jobs just to survive? How about you implement a UBI so we can push the country forward, and pay our fireys what they need rather than looking for yet more free labour?

It’s a very misleading story. Mike’s piece is conversation starter, about what options might we need in future to deal with mega disasters. Mandatory service was suggested as a last ditch option, one of several. Thisisnotjournalism Vic_Rollison MikeKellyofEM lisazdavies

Ok boomer

A dumb, unworkable, and reactionary proposal.

No. They need to build their lives and create the new technologies and industries for the future. Guys of your generation should take off your suits and do the clean up. You created the mess. Leave the young alone. They're fine!

auspol The absurdity evoked by the firesaustralia is spreading to some of the Labor MPs. Bugger that mate, get the kids to safety, they are the future of your past.

I'd settle for expanding school curriculum to include a course on ethics.

Why just teens? Surely a random lottery would be a better approach?

Great idea. I’d actually like to see National Service brought back in. Might help with the drug crises.

Let's fix the problem not the symptoms

Just remember, this guy was a lawyer in the Army. Well away from any action.

Why not! There is a large percentage of retired boomers and their wives in the RFS.

Rubbish all enlisted soldiers and reserves should have to undertake firefighting training as part of their military training. bushfires bushfirecrisis

No. Establish thousands of real, full time, paid jobs in forestry, land, water and conservation management. Forget the whole 'we'll force you to do this' 1950's garbage, and create jobs for people which will boost the economy and help preserve our natural & agriculture environs.

One word: logistics. Policy failure.

Bad and lazy idea. How about defunding the defence force and funneling the money into more professional firefighters and compensation for seasonal volunteers

One should always be careful when channeling Rousseau...

No. And I think most school leavers would prefer that the Government make the effort to mitigate climate change AND its effects.

Only if you improve relative global school results. You want to defund education then milk youth for labour They're not chattel!

davidbewart Yeeahh..naahh

Oh, here we go....again. Some old bloke expecting young people to save his sorry arse. Why doesn’t he lead by example and volunteer in the clean up? Hypocrite!!! We know comes next, the draft of the young to go fight the USA’s war with Iran!

No, send in LNP voters, anti-greens, coal-lovers, old white men who hate Greta Thunberg, etc.

Not sure young people should have to clean up the mess old people made

We don't have the resources to facilitate this or need that many people. Also mandatory service of any kind is not a desirable thing.

No ..start employing people instead

Labor, always trying to shoot itself in the foot. Tell this man to be quiet, it's a poor idea.

He can always get out there and set an example of he's that keen.

Teenagers can't walk three feet to put rubbish in a bin. And he wants them to do what?

Don’t agree with you on a lot of things but this is great.

🤔🤔🤔 👥👥 👥

davidbewart Why should school leavers be put to work to manage the consequences of older generations’ disastrous environmental management and consumeristic lifestyles?

Another helpful suggestion?

What is the point of young Australians being forced into cleaning up after climatechange related disasters if their parents and grandparents refuse to actOnClimate?

Ridiculous. Australia already has ADF response to fires. This isn’t world war 2, it’s a national disaster compounded by idiocy of a negligent, corrupt and incompetent govt, with absolutely not moral compass whatsoever.

Idea has merit!

older twerps have stuffed the kids future now they want to be protected from the cosequences GFY

This doesn't lay at the hands of our children.

If it is paid, it sounds like an interesting option, but not compulsory & should be open to anyone.

The 2008 Garnaut Report was ignored. Politicians only want to send people to war, not prosperity. Labor and Liberal’s track-record on youth and real jobs is criminal negligence.

This is a preposterous idea. We already have an army, navy and air force and police and emergency personnel who are probably under utilized in this crisis. If there is not enough of them, train more.

First thought: it’ll never work. Idea is way too old school. Second immediate thought: wow is this what our future looks like?

Apply that mandatory service to all politicians and no leave/holidays to be taken during a crisis. Serve your country and serve the people.

Or we could just get those currently being paid to actually do their job. Just saying

Take the money from franking credits

How about we create reasonable, full time, permanent jobs!

National Service should be for 2 years mandatory to prepare our entire population civil population for defence and protection, learn skills and stop snowflakes from crumbling into narcissism

Maybe make the biggest emitters pay an ongoing levy. Start with the problem not the victims

wasting a year

Raymartin55 For sure young people should bear even more of the burden for the greed and selfishness of their elders.

That would make the pink batts death's look like a good risk

Not so keen on this idea. Some of his others were ok

😂Silly old Mike Kelly and his dyed hair...

how about a mandatory year of dismantling fossil fuel producers?

Good idea. Give disaffected youth access to matches and dry bush.

Load of B.S... perhaps we could ship 'em over to North Korea for a few months.

Maybe all parliamentarians should be required to do the same

Teens have it hard enough with property prices several hundred times higher than they were in 2010 & the cost of education, general living never being higher

What about making some paid work

yeh f to the o. properly fund the damn emergency response teams and tackle climate change.

this is dumb as heck

No, No, No! The last we need is kids putting out fires!

Raymartin55 I concur with MikeKellyofEM.

I can just see it.....a bunch of untrained, unwilling teenagers getting under everyone's feet.

The Australian tax payers already pay 1000s of people to do nothing, why don’t we train these people to fight fires and call upon them if they’re still unemployed and when needed.

Raymartin55 Oh goody, Conscription - handy for next War.

are they allowed to take their mobile devices with them when they are fighting fires?

NO

I remember writing to the Minister of Defence about this c1973 after Vietnam 🇻🇳.

Mike Kelly. Shut up.

Hey MikeKellyofEM how about you use your time in government to make policy decisions that seek to address the ClimateEmergency rather than making noise about catch phrases and utilising our young?

I thought the main gist of his suggestion was a voluntary civil defence corp, membership of which came with lots of perks like free/cheap public transport, vehicle rego discounts etc. I kind of liked that idea

Are you kidding!!! How about you start working towards weaning yourselves off coal $$$ first and start increasing support for renewables

🤦‍♂️

At 18 years, perhaps a more fitting role could be learning about native animal habitats, bush care/management and eco development.

No Mike. Your govt created this mess and they can bloody well fix it up with all the cost that entails. Volunteers are saving our country while our elected leaders swan about holidaying overseas and failing to plan for a disaster everyone saw coming.

I trust that includes the children of politicians as well, yeah?

How Israeli of him.

Why school leavers? Why not MPs?

I think Australia should have Bushfire Reservists, just like we have Army Reservists. After all, fighting fires is dangerous work people need training for. It’s time to take the climate seriously - for all our sakes. What do you think?ScottMorrisonMP FRNSW

Bugger off Mike Kelly, school leavers didn’t cause the fires or climate change. Get the politicians, the Murdochs and anyone else who has caused this to do it. Young people will have enough to deal with in the future because of bad management of the land. auspol2020

Geez, that's pushing the envelope a bit.. I like the idea of the training, but how about the Govt setting up a special programme for people wanting to learn these skills and not forcing people into it.

Well, he just lost his seat as all the young lazy voters abandon Labor

Voluntary and paid

rakib_h01

I think positions need to first earn their pay packets. Us “so called” little people are tired of struggling and taking the flack for the governments poor decision making

Stupid idea, but I like the sense of urgency. The last time there was a fascist dictator on the loose, liberal democracies the world over retooled themselves almost overnight to get rid of him.

How ridiculous, forcing people to do a year of compulsory service doesn’t guarantee or compel them to do anything with the knowledge once they’re finished. 🤦🏼‍♀️ kneejerkreaction

Would have been better if you did that instead of going to the school of stupid ideas

My suggestion is employees are paid one afternoon a week from their workplaces to undertake disaster and recovery training.

In this age of climate emergency, I'm not so sure people should dismiss this out if hand. We have decades of challenges, whatever policy decisions are taken now.

Lol.

Undertaking some maths and science would be a good place to start. Dump all the woke rubbish from the curriculum and replace with real world experience.

Yes, we once had an entire nation who would not think twice about doing service before study of career. It obviously needs to be reborn on a mandatory and unequivocal basis within this country.

how about federal LNP MP's be signed up first

Jaysus! How about we start with all the climate deniers in parliaments & councils around the countries first. It's not the school leavers who've done most of the damage.

no conscription, period ... another Labor fail

Oh FFS !!

Are Labor actively trying to be unelectable? Note NOT an LNP supporter.

Conscription by any name is a denial of human rights.

Maybe not compulsory but certainly some sort of civil defence organisation carrots not sticks ping MikeKellyofEM

Haven't you lot done enough to our kids

Meh.... maybe we just need to clear out News Corpse & the Libs for a fresh start.

think the rule needs to apply to politicians

.. planting trees 🌱

You first.

Can we also include politicians in that please? (genuine suggestion)
