A single punter has invested $1 million on Bill Shorten to win the May 18 election in the single largest bet ever recorded by betting agency Ladbrokes.and a story about her byA punter has backed Bill Shorten to be the next PM to the tune of $1 million - the largest bet ever recorded by betting agency Ladbrokes.It eclipses the previous record bet at Ladbrokes of $370,000 earlier this year on Winx.

"We've obviously seen some sizeable bets come through in recent times, many of them on Winx, but clearly this gentleman thinks the Labor Party is a safer bet than the now retired mighty mare,"If it pays off, the gambler stands to win $230,000 on the bet which was laid at $1.23. After the bet was made, Ladbrokes tightened its odds on Labor to $1.20.

It also tightened odds on the number of seats Labor would win, with Ladbrokes offering $2.75 for a victory in the 81 to 85 and 86 to 90 seat range. It is understood the punter had been considering the bet for some time before moving on Wednesday, but the size of the wager took the agency by surprise.
