The head of an eastern suburbs private school has described the ban on school graduations with parents as draconian, saying schools should be allowed to design COVID-safe events that would give students something to look forward to in an otherwise bleak year.
"Our grandfather came to Australia with nothing," said Spiro. "For him to not experience the moment his two grandkids achieve this is extremely disappointing."With NSW Health worried about persistent transmission of the coronavirus within the community, new NSW Health guidelines sent to schools this week ruled that graduations with parents and year 12 formals must be suspended for the rest of term three.
Dr Townsend said schools were capable of designing a graduation with parents that complied with safety regulations. Her school, St Catherine's, had been planning an outdoor event in which parents stayed in groups of ten, supervised by a COVID safety martial, until the ban was declared.
"This has been a really tough year and I think most schools have the space to appropriately distance guests and still offer a lovely way to end the year," she said."I find it interesting that I can be invited into a corporate event in the city which hosts many adults, but not bring families on campus whose children are intermingling on a daily basis."
Debbie Terrantroy, a mother of twins in year 12 from the Central Coast, has begun a petition calling for alternatives such as multiple staggered graduations, which has attracted more than 36,000 signatures.
