‘A place to have fun’: Beach safety program aims to protect kids on the autism spectrum | smh_andrew

Bobbing in the waves under the watchful eye of Bronte surf lifesavers, Ollie Henretty appears to have conquered any concerns he had about swimming in the ocean.

“A program such as Dippers offers so much more than just beach safety awareness, which is valuable in itself.” “As a clinician working with individuals on the autism spectrum who had complex needs, no local aquatic service was prepared to take my clients on,” she said.Ms Nhoung-Henretty said she did not want Ollie to miss out on the beach lifestyle because of fear. “I hope he learns that the beach is a place to have fun and that, once he gains respect for the dangers in and out of the water, he will learn that it is a place of enjoyment.

“Plus they may have very limited swimming skills as swimming lessons have not gone well for them in the past.”

_andrew As an autistic adult I cannot be happier to see swim programs for autistic youth. My greatest comfort spot on the planet is, being hugged by a wetsuit, snorkelling. Underwater noise a luxury, so much nature to focus on. If I could stay underwater, I would :)
