Rio Tinto is facing mounting pressure for its destruction of 46,000-year-old ancient rock shelters in Western Australia's Pilbara, with environmental and shareholder activists stepping up calls for executives and the board to be held accountable

Mining giant Rio Tinto is facing mounting pressure over its destruction of 46,000-year-old ancient rock shelters in Western Australia's Pilbara, with environmental and shareholder activists stepping up calls for executives and the board to be held accountable.

Mr Salisbury has apologised to devastated traditional owners, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people, after the miner detonated explosives at the Juukan Gorge site as part of an expansion of the company's iron ore mine. “What sort of person arrives at this decision? What sort of company puts, and keeps, them in charge? What kind of CEO refuses to take any responsibility for the actions of his senior management?” ACCR director Brynn O’Brien said.Former Greens leader Bob Brown called for a Royal Commission into the destruction.

PKKP Aboriginal Corporation director Burchell Hayes told ABC Radio National on Friday morning their lawyers reached out to Indigenous Affairs Minister Ken Wyatt for advice when they found out about the blast plans.

Smartcairns11 Since when has an executive or a corporate board ever taken responsibility? I’ll wait

Jail time and KenWyattMP resignation!!!

My super fund has those shares. I’ve never attended an AGM live or online. This is a good reason. They applied for the exemption.

Nothing can replace this site. No apology, no penalty. Minister Wyatt must go.

Don't just fine the company. Fine the CEO and Board of Directors: a year's salary and all bonuses would be a good rough figure. It won't restore the rock shelters, but it may make similar incidents less common in the future.

The should dissolve the company.

The rock structures and caves are obviously still intact. The work was done around them.

Indigenous activist says racist encounters with US police 'no different to what's happening here'Yuin woman Vickie Lee Roach says Indigenous women were still experiencing the same horrors in the criminal justice system as they did in the 1970s. Parts of the linear park at Nightcliff/Rapid Creek in Darwin allow drinking alcohol, I walked and biked there many times; I never saw the police harass white people but often aborigines. B_ll I was on the streets & saw the whites picked on just as much if your a trouble maker with a criminal record! Now I have grown up my son gets searched for no reason & picked on with his mates! No one protested for Justine, or doesn't FEMALE Australians matter to ANYONE?

'He touched so many hearts': George Floyd remembered at memorial serviceLoved ones of George Floyd have gathered at a memorial service in Minneapolis, pledging alongside anti-racism activists across the country that the black man's death will not be in vain. Anyone would think this was the first person ever murdered by police. Government, and by proxy their legion of jack-booted goons don't give a flying fuck what colour you are. This isn't about race, this is about the media spinning the narrative away from government culpability. Who mourns the innocent lives lost during the protests?
