In two of the countries worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic, a conference centre in Madrid has been converted to treat more than 1,000 patients, while New York City hospital workers are seen disposing of protective wear in a rubbish bin.

Madrid's makeshift hospital at a conference centre treated more than 1,000 coronavirus patients on Thursday as Spain's death toll from the coronavirus rose above 10,000.In Brooklyn, health workers have been seen dumping PPE in an outside garbage canThe IFEMA pavilion, which hosted the climate summit COP25 months ago, has been transformed into a specific coronavirus hospital with 1,500 beds available and 16 intensive care units.

Head of the hospital Fernando Pardos said the facility was tailored specifically for COVID-19 patients, who are being admitted and discharged daily. Footage from the converted conference centre shows lines marking the halls between partitioned, roofless rooms and medical staff wearing face shields, gloves and gowns, while patients stroll the centre together and others play on their phones.

A record 950 people died in Spain overnight, but health officials were encouraged by a slowdown in daily increases in infections and deaths.Spain has the world's second-highest death toll after Italy at 10,003 but Thursday's one-day toll was the highest for any country since the start of the epidemic.

The number of registered coronavirus cases rose about 8 per cent from Wednesday to 110,238, the Health Ministry said.
