A new pedestrian bridge, an Exhibition station upgrade and a mystery $20 million donation are set to transform the inner-city site that plays host to Brisbane’s annual show.

A new pedestrian bridge is being planned for the home of the Ekka as urban renewal and better transport connections make the area busy all year round.

The site’s Exhibition railway station will also be upgraded as part of the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project that links Brisbane’s north and south. “However, we are in consultation with Cross River Rail looking at a potential pedestrian link from the station to Bowen Bridge Road [where the museum’s entrance sits].”But Christou said complications could arise if showground activities such as caravan and camping shows block station access to those not attending the event.

On Wednesday, Queensland Youth Orchestras president Ian Walker announced it had secured $20 million from an anonymous benefactor to make the building home.Essential maintenance will cost government $6 million over the next four years alone.
