Felicity de Somerville had $11,500 withdrawn from her bank account as part of the Coalition’s robodebt scheme, and says she’ll 'never trust Centrelink again'. Now, the government has announced a royal commission. Read more here:

The automated matching of Australian Taxation Office and Centrelink data to raise debts against welfare recipients for money the Coalition government claimed to have overpaid was ruled unlawful by the Federal Court in 2019.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the royal commission risked becoming a "witch hunt" if it did not also examine Labor's time in office. He said the prime minister "should be concentrating more on how we can help families and less on how we can get square with Scott Morrison".The Coalition has previously argued $750 million in reimbursements have been made and problems have been addressed.Mr Albanese said decisions about witnesses and compensation would be left to the royal commissioner.

The royal commission will be tasked with establishing who was responsible for the scheme, what advice was used in its implementation and the complaints handling processes. It would also look at the cost to taxpayers of the debacle and harm caused to those targeted. The robodebt scheme, which matched Australian Taxation Office and Centrelink data to claw back welfare benefits, was deemed unlawful by the Federal Court. The government believes key questions remain unanswered after a $1.

So, you're investigation the ALP are YOU? As the ALP and BILL SHORTEN BUILT ROBO DEBT.

😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

Centrelink is still broken. Have you tried to use their website. Still can’t get through on numbers off the website. They offer you help but when you get there, nothing. It’s as if they are set up to deter you from claiming a benefit & waisting weeks trying. Disgraceful really.

Thank u felicitydesomervillelegend

Meanwhile the overseeing Ministers were happily rorting away, both hands in the till....

Oh rubbish

Perhaps now that the ball has bounced! The people who were incarcerated in hotel rooms during the early days of the Pandemic will also be given a break! A very hefty cost for those who were found negative before and after their incarceration!

I too, single mum working in finance, albeit part time as I was my sons only parent. Full transparency, disclosing every cent I earned, ethics instilled by my parents. At 43, I was hit with a $3800+ debt out of the blue. I questioned the validity. I fought. I lost. I paid

She and others received over a billion dollars what more do you leeches want?

All those I know who were wrongfully billed would not have had anywhere near $11,500 in their bank account🤔

Shorten 'The automation of this process will free up resources and result in more people being referred to the tax garnishee process, retrieving more outstanding debt on behalf of taxpayers.'

In all likelihood the money wasn't hers, and she had had numerous notifications of recovery action.

The vast majority of debts identified were genuine overpayments and should rightly have been recovered. The method was the issue.

Don't ruin a good story with facts SBS. ROBODEBT: The system was first put together by the then Labor leadership team of Bill Shorten and Tanya Plibersek to be imposed by Centrelink 👇👇👇👇

Missing from all these stories will be the important fact that these people were overpaid massive amounts of money, mostly due to their non disclosure of income

Thats a lot in overpayments. Maybe she should have voluntarily paid it back earlier.
